Especially if they make the Comet play in Vancouver or close by. And travel will be controlled to prevent the spread of covid so his travel schedule may not be any worse than if he were on an NHL team. Just saying that a demotion to the AHL may not be the dreaded punishment it once was, for this season. So Louie may say ya go ahead demote me.
It's more likely the AHL won't play any games, period. So if Loui gets demoted, he's not playing at all - spelling the end of his hockey career for sure.

If he wants it to continue, he needs to terminate and sign wherever he can actually play games - most likely Sweden, but maybe Montreal or Dallas signs him for league minimum - which, for the upcoming season, will mean only a 300k reduction in salary for him.

Right. But do the Canucks want to again be the team that plays that kind of hardball with one of their franchise level youngsters? I doubt Benning and the Aquamen repeat the sins of ownership and management past, they'll deal fairly with him and Petey.

I think they will absolutely open with that offer of short-term, but I doubt the play hardball.
I doubt that scenario is seen as hardball - had Aquaman not let Hughes join the team after college, he'd be making ELC money in, 2021/22. Instead, he's making an extra $5 million. Pretty generous, if you ask me!

Looked up Jayce Hawryluk after hearing the interest in him. Might be worth a shot for bottom lineup energy and defensive support and reading the Dobber comment history, he seemed to be tracking fine before falling off. They need to move on from bottom lineup guys like Beagle, Roussel, and Sutter pretty quick and could use another Motte type while the team gets a read on some of their own picks as they develop. Good Western Canadian kid, I'd do it.

Our Gretzky got his Kurri. His name is Miller. Now he needs his Cement Head.

Schmidt trade boosts D-corps, but Canucks need to fill void up front

Iain MacIntyre

Benning was both good and lucky to get Schmidt, locking him in as a potential target on the first night of free agency... and then waiting two days to close the deal.

Schmidt fulfills the mission to improve Vancouver’s defence. His skating, passing and two-way ability make him an upgrade on Tanev, who will still be missed in the dressing room and on the penalty kill, and the 29-year-old should be the Canucks’ second-best defenceman behind Quinn Hughes.

“I am extremely happy getting Nate Schmidt,” Benning said Friday. “You look at the free-agent marketplace and he’s right up there with the best guys that were available. We’re going to end up doing OK on that.

“I’m going to continue looking. It hasn’t ended just because we’re at the end of the week. There’s still lots of talk between teams and if I can continue to make the team better, we’re going to.”

But there is no one to replace Toffoli, which is why Benning is still nibbling around the edges of free agency, looking for a budget forward with offensive upside while also monitoring teams in case other players shake free.

Interesting....especially how he had NS in mind right away. This would've been at the height of the whingeing and whining frenzy around canucksland about him sleeping while all the good pieces move around

It does explain the holdup in making offers to Tanev,Stetcher and Tofolli. He was waiting on Schimdt. Not asleep at the wheel at all.

I never believed he was asleep at the wheel. There is no way he hadn't talked to Tanev, Marky, and Toffys agents. He knew they were all looking for term that we were not willing to give. And he probably listened to a bunch of people here and decided that Stetcher was too small, and wanted some size in the bottom defense pairing.

This backs up the idea that Benning didn’t “lose” any of the former Canuck free agents, he just didn’t want them.

That is what bugs me about the media, they all seem to characterize it as the Canucks losing key assets and having taken a step back. I think that’s wrong, this was addition by subtraction. At the very least.

As for Toffoli, I wanted him back but while his injury in the bubble probably slowed him it also revealed that the offense didn't slow down without him either.

Anyway onwards and upwards

The only move that they made which I think was a whiff was letting Stetcher go. Tanev and Markstrom wanted cash, term and (in Markstrom's case) no-movement protection. Benning didn't - and should not have anyway - accept the term both guys ended up getting. Long-term, letting Markstrom and Tanev go was the better option than keeping them at the term and cash they got - to say nothing of the NMC Markstrom got.

Stetcher... I get that Benning was waiting for dominoes to fall but he could have invested a little more communication and relationship capital in keeping Stetcher's camp in orbit instead of keeping him on-hold. Still and all, if losing Stetcher is the worst of it, Benning came out alright. The kid is replaceable.

Toffoli... meh. When Schmidt's salary came on, there was no chance of fitting Toffoli's salary under the flat cap. For those still bitching about the assets given in what is now a rental trade - do keep in mind that the trade was done BEFORE the COVID outbreak. No COVID = no flat cap = more ability to keep folks like Toffoli. Besides, it gives kids like Hoglander and Podkolzin a spot to grab whenever they come over. That would not be quite the case with Toffoli at 4 more years in the top-6.

Time to see what the youngsters in the system can do. I suspect lateral club progression this season, but 21/22 should be promising.

Or...he had no intention on bringing Troy back but didnt want to embarass the guy or negatively affect his ability to find employment elsewhere. This is my suspicion

Troy Stecher had the Linden stigma - much loved in the community and for that was greatly overrated due to the love. Good local guy but we won’t miss him in the ice. Book closed, whatevs.

The Impatient please me now Benning Bashers are definitely eating crow regarding Nate Schmidt but then again they’ve been eating crow for awhile, that’s OK they will persevere- as they always have the bad contracts to fall back onto, but that window - the next two years is closing as those bad contracts start fading out as we move into the Pettersson Hughes era of Canuck hockey in which I strongly believe will be the greatest era of Canuck hockey. If I were a Benning Bashers I’d hop on the Benning Train, there still time to redeem yourself but the window is closing as we are in the midst GM’ing Geniusness!!

Stecher isn’t overrated. He’s a bottom pairing D man and is paid as such. As lousy as the pitchfork crew makes him out to be, he’d currently be the teams 5th best D man. Is that a problem? Yes it is, it illustrates a lack of depth that is capable of playing in the league.

The issue is we can’t afford to be paying 3rd pairing D-men much money at all at this juncture, not until these bad contracts start going away over the next two seasons but the Hughes and Pettersson contracts kind of mute point the bad contracts as they leave the books. In other words we are going to have to rely on entry level bargain type contracts in the areas of bottom 6 forward contracts (MacEwan, Gaudette, Lockwood, Lind, Motte, Podkolzin, Hoglander) and 3rd pairing D-men (Juolevi, Rathbone, Woo, Rafferty, Chatfield)

The saving grace Blob - is I don’t think we will be seeing as many draft picks and prospects being dealt as we seen with Benning once Petey and Hughes sign their next deal as we will have to rely heavy on entry level contracts

Fair enough, but 1.7 million for a bottom pairing D man is peanuts. He is a victim of the rotten contracts littering the roster in Beagle, Roussel, Eriksson, Sutter, Benn, Ferland etc.

At this point I’d bring back Leivo and sign another depth D man. I’m not a huge fan of Fantenberg. He competes hard but he is utterly useless with the puck on his stick. Off the glass and out. No thanks. I think they’ll be lucky if one of the younger D men in the organization can play next year.
