Troy Stecher Was One of The Best Penalty Killing Defensemen in the NHL

Not saying you overrated him, but Stecher was massively overrated by some in this market - particularly Benning Bashers and the TSN crew.

Fair enough, but 1.7 million for a bottom pairing D man is peanuts. He is a victim of the rotten contracts littering the roster in Beagle, Roussel, Eriksson, Sutter, Benn, Ferland etc.
Agree re the contract being peanuts, but they had room for him. Stecher just didn't want to wait and risk Detroit's offer being pulled - from which I can infer that Detroit's was the only offer on the table, and what does that say about Stecher's value?

In the end, he's a bottom pairing dman shuffling out, which happens on all good teams in the league. I'm sad for the guy on a personal level, but as a fan of the canucks I don't really care.

I don’t mind Benn and a couple of these rookies rotating through the bottom pairing until at least next season’s trade deadline. Chatfield, Rafferty, Juolevi, Brisebois, and Sautner have all cooked in Utica. It’s time to decide if they can help the big club or are write-offs. Rathbone and Woo could season a bit in Utica, but if they out-perform, they could be call-ups, too. I liked Fantenberg in the line-up during the playoffs, but yes he is an “off the glass and out“ kind of defensemen like Benn. I’d rather see Juolevi given a chance than Fantenberg at this point. If they bring in one defensemen that is better than Benn and leave Benn in the press box allowing at least one rookie to get ice-time that would be okay, but with Green as coach, you know a veteran like Benn wouldn’t sit much and would soak-up the rookies minutes. If they could upgrade Benn and then trade him away, that would be ideal.

@ Berry Picker I don’t think he’s that great either and I could really care less if he’s on the team or not. But he’s a fair bit better than Olaf, Cafferty, Woo etc. I do know however, he isn’t as bad as the coal miner’s crew makes him out to be. He isn’t moving the needle one way or another but neither are the shitty six who make far more money than Stecher and add far less to the team.

There will be injuries, there always are. Need another young defender in the mix. Would be great to make a deal for the Blue's Vince Dunn.
Might cost a pick and either a roster player that we could lose without a big impact or a prospect that doesn't really fit our structure in the
near future, meaning we have other options.
If one of our top four end up getting hurt 10-20 games, I can't see Benn as a viable solution.

Dunn would be too pricey. They would want a high pick and probably a teams top 5 prospect. We can’t be doing that shit anymore.

Interesting read on what Schmidt brings to the team. If he comes as advertised, he will take a big load off Huggy and be another D-man who can help our zone exits & zone entries with puck possession. The guy compares our D to Tampa and Dallas who also have 2 guys really good @ handling the puck.

Dunn got undressed defensively by our forwards in our playoff match against the Blues quite regularly. He has more holes in his defence than impetigo riddled junkies ole Dole wrestles with on dirty mattresses in the alleys of the DTES

Lancer wrote: Sun Oct 18, 2020 7:36 am Stetcher... I get that Benning was waiting for dominoes to fall but he could have invested a little more communication and relationship capital in keeping Stetcher's camp in orbit instead of keeping him on-hold. Still and all, if losing Stetcher is the worst of it, Benning came out alright. The kid is replaceable.
It's a bit of a leap to say he didn't invest any communication there. The bottom line was that Stecher had permanently played his way onto the 3rd pairing, barring injuries. His QO was too much, and made him eligible for arbitration.

The fact that they told him they wanted him back but only at what they could afford should have been all the communication necessary if Stecher really wanted to stay here. The fact that he didn't wait, and signed as quickly as he could with Detroit, has to make one think that he felt slighted by the fact that the Canucks wanted to upgrade their blueline but didn't consider him to be that upgrade. Detroit has piles of cap, and I doubt they set a deadline for Stecher to sign by (also speculation on my part). Troy definitely could have waited with an offer on the table for a few days.

Like you say though, the kid is replaceable, and the only reason that it seems like a bit of a loss is because he's a right shot, something that we are in short supply of. I'll bet that Juolevi is a more effective player than Stecher by the 20 game mark, problem is that he plays the left side.

This.

There were enough times this season where we saw Troy getting up off the ice or skating back to the bench after being out of position while the refs were digging the puck out of our net. He actually isn't a terrible player, he was just often out muscled or caught chasing the wrong way.....and the result was a goal against. Troy was guilty of nothing more than trying to do too much at times. No question the kid has piles of heart.

Also, when you're his size you have to be a top skater and quick puck mover, and against Vegas Troy was neither.....I think Benning had seen enough and wanted some more beef back there.

Bottom pairing was likely Stecher on the right and Benn on the left.
Now it’s probably Juolevi or Rathbone on the left and Benn on the right.
If it’s a downgrade to start, it’s not much of one, and these prospects are not fully developed.
Stecher has probably already reached his peak. Nothing wrong with his effort, but if the Canucks wanted to change theIr defence, they had to move on from someone.
