We all liked the Virtanen and the Juolevi picks, but we would have gotten Necas over Petterson, Dobson over Hughes and Knight over Podkolsin.
Just think how much further ahead the team would be.
Too true CP.

I know that I was all down on QH until i watched a bunch of highlight videos and realized the kid was something more than. 5'10" 170lb wet noodle.

Same goes for Pettey. Height and weight are always the first things i check lol.
Well yes, size is important but it is not the deal breaker.

I was pushing hard for Quinn and Pete while most at HF were after the likes of Vilardi and Dobson. Big time objections to Madden ("that's not how you pronounce Jake Wise"). The so called general manager class had the strongest objections to these picks

Both Petey and Quinn found their positional sweet spots very quickly. Quinn had amazing stamina for a college kid not use to playing so often.
Petey broke through the thresh hold almost immediately as well. He's a little awkward at times but it hasn't hurt him too much.

lol checking that 2017 nhl draft thread, here are a few gems.
Y2k picks for 4th OA Vilardi and 5th OA Mittelstadt/Glass.

right after drafting Petey: "****ing idiots!" & "Blown pick. Stupid ****ing idiots "

Y2K: "Going to be funny quoting the people who love this pick when we look back and see Vilardi was the better pick."

Nuckles: "*sigh* Pettersson is fine...shouldn't have passed on Vilardi though... "

MS at draft day:
"Should be Vilardi.
Expecting Glass.
Glass is such a meh result but I'd almost be relieved because I think they could do something a lot dumber."

Oct after draft: "I would have taken Vilardi at #5 (although Pettersson was my 2nd choice) and had Heponiemi at 33. Just so I don't get accused of hindsight, I did call Heponiemi a guy who should go in the first round in a post on the prospects board"
A long time ago, a baseball player remarked: "If I owned a ballclub, I'd hire a $5,000 coach and a $15,000 scout."

You should check the 2018 thread, that same guy was bummed for days that we took Hughes instead of his choice, Noah Dobson :D

Brackett’s Impressive Track Record
Brackett is leaving the Vancouver Canucks after 12 years, having served as their Director of Amateur Scouting since 2015. Coincidentally, since 2015, Vancouver has consistently been one of the best scouting and drafting organizations in the league, and it’s the single biggest reason why they’re back in the playoffs again.

In 2017, Brackett pushed hard for Elias Pettersson as Vancouver’s pick at fifth overall, when it was widely believed GM Jim Benning wanted Cody Glass. One scout told The Hockey News that “my understanding is that Pettersson was never a guy Benning wanted.” Pettersson, of course, won the Calder Trophy in 2018-19, is already one of the top players in the NHL and the catalyst for the Canucks’ resurgence.

Brackett also oversaw the selection of Calder Trophy favorite Quinn Hughes at seventh overall in 2018, and again pushed hard for Vasili Podkolzin at 10th overall this past draft. Time will tell, but all signs point towards Podkolzin becoming a top-six NHL player. The only high pick during Brackett’s tenure that hasn’t panned out? 2016 fifth overall pick Olli Juolevi, a player GM Jim Benning loved, pushed for and picked – against Brackett’s recommendation. Wonder if there’s anything to that.

Brackett hasn’t only found success with high draft picks either. Vancouver also looks like they hit on depth selections Jack Rathbone at 95th overall in 2017, Tyler Madden at 68th overall in 2018 (subsequently traded to LA for Tyler Toffoli) and Nils Hoglander, picked 40th overall in 2019. Aidan McDonagh (195th in 2018), Jett Woo (37th in 2018) and Michael DiPietro (64th in 2017) are also all on promising tracks towards the NHL. All were depth selections.

Hiring Brackett as Assistant General Manager and Director of Amateur Scouting would provide MUCH needed pedigree in the Sabres’ scouting department, and it would give him the promotion and control he’s seeking. His departure is Vancouver’s loss, and it will be interesting to see if their drafting success continues into the future.

Brackett was ostensibly in charge of the draft, but it doesn’t sound like he always had the easiest time convincing his boss to make certain choices. Thankfully for Canucks fans, Brackett has prevailed more often than not – particularly at the 2017 draft when a skinny Swede was available early.

“My understanding,” said the scout, “is that Pettersson was never a guy Benning wanted.”

This was echoed by other sources and keep in mind, Pettersson wasn’t universally ranked as high as the No. 5 slot the Canucks picked him at. Casey Mittelstadt was still on the board

Juolevi was Benning’s choice back in 2016 because the GM wanted a defenceman and loved what he saw from the Finn at the world juniors. He could have chosen Mikhail Sergachev or Charlie McAvoy. Benning is believed to have gone with Brackett’s first-round recommendation ever since.
Fuck it why not throw some gas on the board.

Juolevi was a horrendous pick. Whoever was responsible for it, be it Benning, Bracket, Delorme or Linden. Let alone Tkachuk, Sergachev, or MacEvoy, Jakob Chychrun would look pretty damned good.
