The Schmautz brothers: (L to R) Arnie, Bobby, Cliff. Arnie and Cliff both played several seasons with the Portland Buckaroos. Arnie also skated with New Westminster and Victoria in the WHL. Bobby spent time in the WHL with the Los Angeles Blades, Salt Lake Golden Eagles, and Seattle Totems; and played 761 NHL games. Cliff also played with Calgary in the WHL and notched 56 NHL games. Arnie’s # 8 was retired by the Buckaroos in 1968. This pic is from 1966-67.

1962-63 Vancouver Canucks. Several long-time WHL veterans, plus future NHLer and Vezina Trophy winner Gilles Villemure, who played every game (70) in goal for the Canucks this season and won the WHL Rookie-Of-The-Year Award. Fantastic sweaters with the Johnny Canuck crest!

Canucks legend Keke Mortson winding down his career as player/coach of the Southern Hockey League's Macon Whoopees.

The Whoopees had affiliation agreements with both the Houston Aeros and Cleveland Crusaders of the World Hockey Association. The team was led by 39 year old player/coach Keke Mortson, who played in 67 games with the Aeros in the WHA's inaugural season. Mortson, a career minor leaguer and colorful character, was the team's leading scorer, with 24 goals and 51 assists in 59 games. Mortson is probably best known for being the first hockey player to wear the number 99. Goaltender Ron Grahame played his first season of pro hockey in Macon and went on to play in 114 games in the NHL.

That inaugural Aeros team had a few former Canucks on it.

Ted Taylor
Murray Hall
Paul Popiel
George 'Duke' Harris
Cleland 'Keke' Mortson
Dunc McCallum
John Schella

The following year, Gordie Howe joined them and scored 100 points in 70 games at the age of 45.

I guess the WHA was a great new option for a lot of the better players stuck in the WHL back then.

I came across a guy who knew Keke Mortson from way back in his Ontario days on the main hockey forum at HF when I was going by 'Keke Mortson's Helmet'. That was pretty cool, I thought.

Funny there was a Marty Howe on that Canucks team. He’s way too old to be Gordie’s son Marty obviously, but is he a relative?

Punishing d-man Daniel Rahimi never quite made the cut in Vancouver, but was given a three year contract and later was part of the trade that brought in Ehrhoff.

After a long SHL career with a couple of seasons in the AHL, KHL and the Swiss league thrown in for good measure, he has now returned home to the team that raised him.

Still has a bit of a mean streak in him and is leading the league in hits.
Got a two game suspension for this little love tap to a guy, Blomstrand, he had been having words with throughout the game...
You can see Blomstrand is saying something to him right before the little whack.

The best thing is we will play Södertälje again right after Rahimi gets back on the team.
Will be interesting to see how they interact....

So apparently Burke was on the radio this morning saying this:
Sportsnet 650
@Sportsnet650 3m
"I didn't get full value for Pavel Bure..." - Brian Burke

@Burkie2020 with @JamesCybulski and @psolkowski
Don't worry, Micky will be along shortly with a link.

Actual trade: Bure to the Florida Panthers, with Bret Hedican, Brad Ference, and Vancouver's third-round choice in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft (Robert Fried) for Ed Jovanovski, Dave Gagner, Mike Brown, Kevin Weekes, and Florida's first-round choice in the 2000 draft (Nathan Smith)

Now, obviously Burke is stating the obvious here but I also don't think he good 'bent over' in the trade either. It was an 'alright' trade but Vancouver for sure did not get full value for it.

hmm... Probably drop the 3rd rounder Vancouver gave up and receive another 1st from Florida and that would probably been a trade more worthy of Bure's talent. Brad Ference was a disaster, always hated that pick so didn't care that he was part of it. Hedican, yeah, we were getting JovoCop so I see why he went the other way. Gagner was a centerpiece of the trade. Brown was useless, Weekes, was a good gamble at the time.

I was driving and picked up on some of BB's morning segment. We was pretty depressing on the finances moving forward. GMs and coaches not
going to be paid near as much when their gigs are up. Figures up to five years to get back to a healthy league again and that's if a vaccine is
found. Soon as he started on money structuring, he gets all hyper. He's always going to be a GM deep down.

Losing Bure really hurt, we finally had a true superstar and one of the world's premier snipers and they had to deal him. I was awfully glad to get Jovo but they gave up a HHOFer and to only get that as a return was very disappointing. Wasn't Gillis the agent for Bure at the end there? Between that and taking Nonis' job, no wonder Burke hates his guts.
