2020/2021 Cap compliance

Post by Cherry Picker »

If the Cap goes up only a little and the Canucks follow the roster plan as follows they will be about 5 million over the Cap next season. The easiest option to be cap compliant would be to move Eriksson’s salary. If that is not possible they probably don’t sign one of Tanev or Markstrom, although there are limitless other possibilities from trades and not signing others.

Cap is projected to increase $3M, one/two/all of Loui, Sven, Sutter can be moved, Rafferty replaces Stecher.

Not to nitpick but I think you're a half-mil high on each of Shotgun and Gaud.

Zero problem being cap compliant next season...

I think you’re a bit high on Gaudette’s contract. Stecher won’t likely be back and Tanev should probably get another 500 K. But there will need to be some movement to ice a good hockey team next year. Hughes and Pettersson have performance bonus to be factored in as well.

Hopefully Elmer can move Sutter and/or Baertschi.

It’s a shame some of the dumb dumb contracts weren’t a year shorter.

There is always movement every off-season on every NHL team, it's a fluid situation...

Oh absolutely, that goes without saying. Benning will need to shed a bit of salary. It will be an interesting off season.

You've been saying this for years. It hasn't happened yet, and Benning tried to move Sven already in order to get Sven a better fit and because he had no use for the guy.....eventually waived him and nobody even so much as sniffed.

If a player who is allegedly easily moved doesn't get snapped up on waviers for free, it's gonna be a tougher sell when it's going to cost an asset, unless it's a dead salary for dead salary swap.....which we don't want.

Jake and Adam are going to be the most interesting of that bunch in terms of negotiations. If Virtanen continues his current play there's no reason he doesn't hit 20 goals and 45 points. And as of this season he also hits, forechecks hard, and comes back on defense better. It's worth pointing out that we have been paying Sutter a helluvalot more than that $3.5M for a helluvalot less in terms of production and on-ice value. Granted Bird Bones got paid for being defensively responsible and having a track record of reliable play in that department, but his contract value was also factored to a salary cap that is now 4 years old. Despite Jake's inconsistencies, his agent is definitely going to say he will cost us more than we are paying a 30 point, injury prone, feather.

Gaudette will be interesting because he's worth more than that cap hit when compared to some vets we have, however he's still barely more than a rookie. I foresee him signing at that price tag but the term will be the sticking point on both sides.....it honestly wouldn't surprise me to see him gamble on himself and sign a one or two year deal.

Stecher won't be back.

Motte is also fodder if we don't have space and can replace him from the farm on an ELC.

:eh:

I've been saying for years that Loui could get moved in the summer of 2020... I'm still saying that.

I've never talked about moving Sven or Sutter until this season.

(I've said all along we should move Sutter when Gaudette is ready and it looks like this summer is that time)

As has already been stated in this thread, the off-season is when moves like these are made.

Sven is tearing up the AHL, proving he's healthy, his real-money wage is just $2.4M next season, he's easily moved...

There was mention that Pittsburgh were looking to backfill Jake Guentzel. Baertschi could perhaps meet that need in a win-win trade for both teams.

The contracts for Virtanen amd Gaudette should be bridge. They are both worth keeping at this point. Still need to see more.

Even two year deals would be fine as they would expire a year after Pete and Quinn are done. Plus find out once and for all if they're adequate.

So for now, 2.8 to 3 for Jake and 2.5 for Adam--(that could be higher but the face-off thing).

This is difficult to work out yet because I have no idea what will happen with Ferland, or Leivo for that matter. Yes Leivo will recover but wiil

he pick up where he left off, (which was finally playing decent hockey).

Doc's right; there wont be a problem moving Baertchi if not at the deadline, in the summer.

I'm leery what to do with Stecher. Benn hasn't worked out to well yet. Fantenburg is gone I think and although it looks real good right now

on the farm with Rafferty and Juolevi coming on, a position on the NHL club is unknown. I said this before, I think the club needs Tanev,

(the healthy one), just don't see a raise though, well maybe 200k, bot NO more than 4 years. We likely lose him.

Stecher would have to agree to a pay cut. 3 for 3. He might but probably not. We have to be cautious because no (big) FA signings this summer.

Keep both goalies we have and worry about the effin starbuck draft later. Sucks..

Update: With an attempt to sign most of the best players the Canucks may lose to what I subjectively think are reasonable contracts, minus Stecher and Leivo, Ferland on LTIR and cap raised to 83 mil, looks like the Canucks would be about Baertschi’s contract over the cap. Here’s my math:

Left wing: J.T. Miller ($5,250,000) - Tanner Pearson ($3,750,000) - Antoine Roussel ($3,000,000) - Tyler Motte ($1,250,000)

The one thing listed in a separate column is $3,700,000 in bonuses. That isn’t included in the cap generated by the Cap Friendly program, so I am not sure how or if that will affect cap compliance?
