Rangers' Panarin denies assault allegations, taking leave from team
New York Rangers star Artemi Panarin is taking a leave of absence from the team after a Russian tabloid printed allegations from a former coach that he attacked a woman in Latvia almost a decade ago, which he denies.

Andrei Nazarov, a former NHL enforcer who coached Panarin in the Kontinental Hockey League, told Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda in a story published Saturday that Panarin attacked an 18-year-old Latvian woman in a hotel bar in the Latvian capital of Riga following a game in December 2011.

Nazarov told the tabloid that Panarin knocked the woman to the floor with ``several powerful blows.'' Nazarov added that he later heard that the Latvian authorities looked into the incident but that no action was taken after ``authoritative'' locals negotiated with the police not to pursue the case, allegedly after money changed hands.

Nazarov said he was motivated to speak about the alleged incident because he disagreed with Panarin's repeated criticism of the Russian government. Panarin played for Nazarov with Vityaz Chekhov from 2010-2012.

``Artemi vehemently and unequivocally denies any and all allegations in this fabricated story,'' the Rangers said in a statement Monday. ``This is clearly an intimidation tactic being used against him for being outspoken on recent political events. Artemi is obviously shaken and concerned and will take some time away from the team. The Rangers fully support Artemi and will work with him to identify the source of these unfounded allegations.''

Panarin has been a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and last month posted his support on social media for opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was arrested last month upon returning to Moscow and was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for violating terms of his probation.

Panarin, 29, has played in the NHL since 2015 and was a finalist for the league's MVP award last season. He won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 2016 with Chicago where he played two seasons, went to Columbus for two more and then signed an $81.5 million, seven-year contract with New York in 2019.

Rangers teammate Ryan Strome praised Panarin as a person and role model for him and other young players.

``I think `Bread' knows how much we love him, how much we care for him, how much we appreciate what he does for us,' Strome said. ''We wish for the best for him and obviously give him his time to get things straightened out.``

Panarin leads the Rangers with 18 points on five goals and 13 assists. They next play Wednesday against Philadelphia.

Coach David Quinn said he and his players spoke about Panarin's absence before practice Monday.

``We're going to help Artemi through this difficult time,'' Quinn said. ``You have to continue to unite as a team. It's hard to overcome losing a player like Artemi from a hockey standpoint, but we've got to find a way to do it.''

Jim Benning says Bo Horvat has played some of his best hockey over the last 3 weeks.
-We still have 27 games left in the season and 16 games left until the trade deadline. The last couple of weeks we've been in all the games. We've got a resilient group. They're going to work and compete every night.

Our best young players are 21-23 years old. Teams in this division are physically mature. They've got stronger older players. But I think it's going to be great for our young players to play in this division.

Travis is doing a good job with our group. Our coaches are doing good work for us. They're understanding the problems that we have. That's the one I'm not looking to make a coaching change. thing with playing the same teams over and over, the weaknesses that you have get exposed.-

-Jim Benning: I have a real good relationship with Francesco. He's the guy that I deal with on a day-to-day basis. We had a plan this summer. We have a plan going forward. He update him on that plan constantly. It's nice that he's been supportive of us.

-Jim Benning: When we planned the team out this summer, we were in the Pacific Division and were going to be playing all the teams in the league. With the pandemic, things have changed. We're in uncharted territory here. We're playing every second night.
- We're going to be stronger for going through this adversity.
We're going to give ourselves an opportunity to compete in all the games.

Jim Benning: Of course I'm not happy with our record, but I think if you play the right way and do things the right way, our record will be better than it is now.
We live day-to-day. We're in today's world. We played Toronto last night. We play them again tomorrow night. That's what we're focused on right now. The trade deadline is five weeks away. We're going to wait to see where we're at... Haven't started talks with Tanner Pearson yet.

Jim Benning: Pearson leads by example. He plays the right way. He's strong on the walls. He gets to the net. The way he handles himself on a daily basis, he helps with our culture and with our group. We're going to try to re-sign him.

--Jim Benning: It's been a trying year for Jake. It's been hard on a lot of our young players in this format. Teams have phoned and inquired about Jake. We want to do the right thing for our organization. We've been patient with Jake. Last night was a glimpe at what he's capable of

--Jim Benning: We're going to look inwards to try and make the team better for now.

--Jim Benning: I would suspect teams that think they have a good chance to win will look to add a player or two that can help get them over the hump, but we'll just have to wait and see what it's like until closer to the deadline.

-- Jim Benning: I don't think there's anything that we're going to do, going to the outside to add a player. We just have to try and figure out how to get better from within. That's the way Travis is attacking this whole thing.

- -Jim Benning: Last year we made the playoffs. We had some success in the bubble. Things have changed with the pandemic and the flat cap and the young players we're going to have to re-sign.

-Jim Benning on the players that left in FA: I had communication with all of their agents as we were going into free agency, as we were working our way through it. We made offers. They got more term and maybe more money than what they were willing to do, so we moved on. -
