It keeps budget teams in the mix and has created this parity we see league-wide.

The PA wouldn’t give two shits if the next CBA allowed for buyouts that didn’t count against the cap. So long as the player still gets his due, It’s just more money in the unions’s coffers and the player’s wallet because the hour after a guy is bought out he can sign somewhere else.

I do think there should be provisions to allow for situations where a player just goes off a cliff like Eriksson has. But there also needs to be penalties for GM’s who over pay aging stars and just want out from under their mistake. It would have to be weighed factoring in players age when signing, year-to-year performance compared to previous performance, etc.....
The big market teams still have tools to flex their financial muscle....

Yes, they can still do that. But they can't just buyout their mistakes without some form of cap penalty. The system as it stands is fair in the sense of allowing teams to use their financial advantage when signing a player, and it also keeps it somewhat balanced by limiting term by a year to a max of 7 vs the team that wants to re-sign being permitted 8. There is a sort of balance in the current system.

The balance disappears because players an get their big ticket and then coast without much fear of anything other than maybe having to move. The money will keep coming in.

I think we're on the same page in what should be permitted though.

Overall, I think JB did quite well today. He was always linked to Tyler Myers and now he finally got his man. We really needed a right shot D and Myers checks alot of boxes that we need help in. Jordie Benn looks like a good pickup for what he brings at the contract he signed for, sounds a bit like a poor man's Willie Mitchell. Both Myers and Benn seem pretty durable and haven't missed very many games the last couple seasons. JB also picked up some depth players in Fatenberg, Gravovac and McIntyre; they should help Utica and may get some games here if when we get hit with injuries.

My only beef is the fact JB just discarded Hutty and Granny for nothing (BHutt moreso than the Granimal). I will admit that a Benn type is what we need in the bottom pairing rather than a Del Zotto, Pooalot or even Hutty and while Granny is a decent bottom 6 forward, there really is no room for him now. If JB knew he wanted to go in a different direction, he should have traded those 2 @ the TDD. Maybe they were not worth much, but one would think a young, smooth skating D-man and a versatile 2-way forward would get something. Maybe a 2nd rounder for Hutty and a 4th for Granny? If not a pick, then maybe some lower tier prospect like a Tyler Motte. He just traded a 1st rounder for TJ Miller, having some foresight to plan ahead would have been a great way to acquire/recoup some picks. Planning and thinking ahead is something JB has taken criticism for in the past (ie: trading Nilsson and having no one when Demko went down) and we see it again in the recent transactions.

While the Nucks made some nice moves in the right direction today, there is some lvl of risk. By moving out Hutty, we're pretty much gifting a spot to Hughes and betting a lot of chips on him. When Edler goes down and if Hughes is struggling, that left side D is going to look really bad all of the sudden. There's some risk in our goaltenders as well. I like the potential of some of the young guys we have back there, but after Marky Mark, there is not a lot of NHL experience back there. Demko, Dipietro, Kielly and McIntyre are all really green and a bunch of spring chickens. I guess there's Bachman, but I doubt Greener wants to go that route again. Instead of McIntyre, maybe JB should have gone with a guy who's a little older with less upside, but has more NHL experience. On the other hand, I guess if you have Ian Clarke who can scout and develop NHL goalies like bunnies, just let him do his thing and we'll be fine. :P

While it would have been nice to get anything back for them, We were short too many defenceman (injuries) to trade Hutton, and nobody wanted Grandlund.

No trade options on that, can't blame JB for it. Takes 2 to tango.
