With the Brome rumours and the recent Lockwood and Michaelis where’s the desperation to sign D-men? I see loads of forwards in the system but not so much for defence. I’d rather be reading how we are about to sign Rathbone and Tryamkin

The problem with the leaves and Barrie is he needs a pure stay at home defender of which toronto lacks, especially on LD.

Plant Barrie with a pure defensive dman and he's golden, pony boy.

The trick is getting Barrie on a semi-decent contract - $5M-$5.5M per range, lots of talented dmen in that category - Theodore, Spurgeon, Orlov, Petry, Schultz.

That's where his value would be, adding another weapon on defense and not taking too much cap %.

We won't have a Norris trophy Chris Pronger/Lidstrom type, but will have multiple dmen who are great at specific duties to help beat teams.

All I know is if we need a goal, it's better to have multiple weapons on D to utilize than just QH. To add Edler is getting up there in NHL years, Myers is a powerful dman with wingspan-but not a dman you put out there to score, Stecher is decent but not a game breaker type like Barrie. Benn/Tanev/Tryamkin etc all defensive dmen types.

Right shot QB Brogan Rafferty is the wild card, we don't know if he can translate his awesome AHL success to the NHL just yet, but he's got the tools, age and experience to blossom in the NHL and score more than Stecher imo.

That said if it came down to Toffoli or Barrie to sign, I'd choose Toffoli and replace Stecher with Rafferty - take that gamble.
