Kesler and Bieksa have their own podcast. They weigh in on the current Canucks and have Bert as their first guest.

https://kesandjuice.com/

(Canucks stuff start around 12:00 mark)

- Nucks finally look like a team that can compete for a playoff spot again
- likes the new players (Myers, Miller, Benn, Ferkland, etc)
- they both like Ferland as a player and hated to play against him. Not sure they know much about how he played so far this year and that he's out again.
- Beags is a great 4th liner if u want a team that can compete. He wins draws, tuff to play against, 200 ft player, great vet, can carry young guys
- Benn a steady vet who can stabilize the 3rd pairing and u can put whoever u want with him (our case Stecher)

- Bert comes on later. He has some interesting stories about training camp, getting some brewskis with the boyz, Crawford, Keenan, etc.
- All the boyz bring video game consoles on the road now, Bert would have broken every single one. :lol:

UWSaint wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2019 12:42 pm Yes, Pettersson falls down a bunch, but it isn't more than last year and it seems to be a bit of a thing to try to draw penalties (which he will get the reputation for and thus will stop being terribly effective). And it doesn't usually take him out of the play (or even result in a turnover) because he pops right back up. I'd rather have him develop more sturdiness and use the move he made the other night to give it to the player checking him, but all that's going to come. When they were 20, we drank heavily when the Sedins fell. By the time they were 25, they were as strong as Peter Forsberg or Jagr on the puck. And we were terribly sober.

I always maintained that this song was about the Sedins (and UW enjoying a drinking game)! :drink:

Demko with another concussion. So maybe we trade him and sign Markstrom and get Dipietro ready for 3 years from now.
Not a new concussion, symptoms from his previous one more likely. I noticed the deliberate choice of words Benning used the other day, Ferland did not suffer a concussion against the Leaves.

I'm not surprised. He could have finish a shift and been hit with a headache, blurred vision, dizziness or any of of host of symptoms.

Over the past year I've been doing quite a bit of research on concussions fuelled by my son suffering one 1.5 years ago. Last Spring I took an excellent course through Laval & U of C on sports related concussions. I've also been following the case of two time Canadian Olympian Tory Nyhaug. He crashed at the World Championships in Baku in mid June of 2018, same day my son suffered his concussion. Nyhaug hasn't competed since and a few weeks ago announced his retirement. He was never again able to train at completion levels without suffering symptoms. In his case, he'd wake up the day after a 1/2 effort training session and feel hung over, headache and disoriented. Doctors finally told him that since his recovery was so slow and with the re-occurring symptoms, he was a good knock away from being hunted by vegans.

Once you start researching concussions, you start to realize what a fucked up injury they are and how little is known about them.
My dad was a competitive chess player (yeah, stay with me...) and when you compete in tournaments or in league games, you get or lose rating points based on your performance and the strength of your opponent. If you play against a player with teh same rating you have, you gain 16 points if you win and lose 16 if you lose. If you play someone far below your level, you may only gain 1 point for a win, but lose 31 if you lose, and if you play someone far better than you, it's the reverse.

So anyway, we were at some people's house, where they had one of those doorway trapeze bars. My dad did a few pullups, then pulled up his legs so he hung upside down, and at that point the trapeze came off, and my dad fell head first, hitting the threshhold. He got a pretty bad concussion.

So, concussions make it harder to focus, concentrate, think. His chess rating dropped sharply.

It took ten years before he reached the same rating he had previous to the concussion.

That really opened my eyes about concussions. You've often heard people say "it was just a concussion", but that's bullshit.
It's a really serious condition. And if it can take ten years for your brain to get back to "normal" after ONE concussion, imagine those that have several over just a few years. :(

---

I also had a colleague at my previous place of employment who was married to a hockey player. Not NHL level, I'd say borderline SHL level, but he played professionally in Germany and won the championship there. Anyway, his career ended abruptly when he had three concussions in one season.

Spent the next five years mainly lying in a dark room. Really tough for her, working full time, having two kids and a husband that was more or less a vegetable... He eventually got better though, went back to college and got a law degree, but five years of their life basically a nightmare.

And people who have been concussed more than once have a far higher risk of contracting both alzheimer's and parkinson's disease.
So, he may end up losing even more years to those concussions. :|

Per, one of the things I've found interesting is the effects of concussion on mental focus and specifically vision. The discussions are now about rehab exercises much the way any other injury is rehabilitated.

There are a lot of focus exercises done where you track a moving object with increasing numbers, size varieties and speed varieties of objects moving in the periphery. Some carry on with the exercises long after rehab just to strengthen focus.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

That really opened my eyes about concussions.
And poor Baertschi has had 5 concussions.
Sven Baertschi revealed his struggles with multiple career concussions. Has had five career-related concussions and is wary of the cumulative effect of and susceptibility to repetitive brain bruises.

That’s the hard part. Baertschi hasn’t played since suffering a concussion Oct. 24 in Las Vegas. He endured a significant setback Nov. 17 – experiencing symptoms including sensitivity to light and dizziness – while skating to elevate his heart rate in the next recovery phase.

https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/b ... -baertschi
It's like a what point does Sven say, ya know what - I think I better quit while he's still somewhat ok, I mean one more good smack to the noggin' and who knows what happens.

Ferland now has had 3 concussions.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

Baertschi should call it a year in the least. Give himself ample time. If he cant make it back then hang em up. Its not worth it. He has made more money in his career than the average person so hopefully he's saved some. He isn't going to get a good contract after this one anyway.

Ferland should take the year too. Too bad cause we need a guy like him but only one who can play ffs.

@DhaliwalSports
The Canucks are working with Sven Baertschi’s agent to try and find him a new home.
Baertschi’s agent Andre Rufener would like a change of scenery for his client, ‘We would like to get traded, I am in contact with Jim Benning, he knows that.’
@DhaliwalSports
Rufener : I am not happy with the way this season has gone for Sven, he played well when he was in the NHL, in my opinion he did not get the opportunity he needed.’
Rufener has permission to help get his client traded, ‘we are looking for a solution ’

@DhaliwalSports
Baertschi has been very professional and has shown a great attitude in Utica where the Canucks have many prospects, both sides are working to see if there is a trade somewhere.

When the fuck did he play well for the canucks this year?

He wont be going anywhere with that yoke of a contract. Hes competing with depth pieces that play for league minimum and bring a physical element. Who the fuck wants to pay that much for a pure scorer who cant score AND has a mush melon?
