Richardstroker69 wrote: Fri Apr 05, 2019 11:24 am If sutter can recover from injury he can still play wing with beagle on a defensive matchup line. He’s a better pker, and defensive forward than every other player on the team. I wouldn’t be kicking him to the curb just yet.
If I was a betting man I'd say Benning keeps Sutter for center depth until Gaudette forces that spot away from BS, as when both Sutter and Beagle are playing this season - as you said - they have proven to be an elite penalty killing force 1-2 punch. Center depth reigns supreme in the NHL in the forward ranks.

But they will look to ask Loui Eriksson to waive his NTC after the season is done, as JB has already said he and his management team will look to see what the plans are for LE after the season. Plus I think a new team, change of scenery would be good for LE's career.

But we won't get to move LE for nothing it's gonna cost a pick/prospect or take back a similar expensive contract with similar terms.

As for Christopher T. looking at defensive dmen trades the past while:

Hamonic -> 1st, two 2nd's
Larsson -> Hall

More in Tanev's range:

Hawks Hjalmarsson to AZ for Connor Murphy (former 1st rd pick, 20th OA, 2011) 6'4-212lbs RD
Not that great defensively his forecaster report says, on dailyfaceoff he's on their 3rd pairing.
and Laurent Dauphin a former 2nd round pick, seems like a career AHLer at this point.

Kris Russell to Dallas for up-and-coming defenceman Jyrki Jokipakka, junior forward Brett Pollock and a conditional second-round selection in the 2016 NHL Draft, pick will be upgraded to a first-rounder if the Stars advance to the Western Conference final.
Canucks could have got that had Hamhuis not hmm'd and haw'ed about his future, thanks to MG's NTC.

So for Tanev a likely return for him is a quality defensive prospect, an ok forward prospect and a 2nd rounder.
A lot of the suggestions being made are somewhat reasonable when looked at in a bubble, but we have to understand that most teams have similar types of lists of players that they want to discard...

For me, I'm curious to hear how fans think the team can weaponize its cap space outside of free agency?

Some heavyweight teams will be hard against and over the cap this summer...

Take care...

This is key. Benning does not operate in isolation. He is competing against 30 other GMs/teams. Last year he landed Beagle and Roussel because he offered them each one more year than other teams. Right or wrong it was the acquisition cost. Its easy to be an internet GM but quite another when dealing with reality.
The only HW the Canucks need

Should they or should they go

Stay

Pettersson
Boeser
Horvat
Roussel
Pearson
Leivo
Beagle
Baertschi

Go

Virtanen (trade)
Granlund (Green loves him)
Motte (Green loves him)
Schaller (Green loves him)
Sutter (Green loves him)
Goldobin (Green hates him)
Eriksson (I know, not happening)

Stay

Hughes
Edler
Tanev
Hutton (traded, if Edler stays and Juolevi promoted)
Stecher
Juolevi (if not traded)

Go

Biega (Green loves him)
Pouliot

On the cusp

Brisebios
McKewen
Teves
Rafferty
Sautner

Best trade bait

Tanev (most likely not - RHD)
Virtanen
Juolevi
Sutter
Tryamkins rights
Demko or Markstrom
Roussel
Hutton (if Edler stays, Juolevi promoted)

- Juolevi for Kapanen? (leaves got a tough summer)
- Jets are in a pickle with Myers and Trouba
- Virtanen for Fabbro?
- Islanders have two excellent RHD prospects - Dobson and Wilde
- Sabres and Avalanche lower 1st round picks have to be in play, those two teams are done with rebuilding, cupboards are packed with young players, they need playoffs next season. Demko to Buffalo’s other 1st. Not sure what the avalanche needs are

This is a huge summer for Benning. He has to make bold moves, enough of the chicken shit moves, enough of the Granlunds and Schallers and Mottes and Pouliots. Big moves! Get rid of the useless. Can’t go into next season with the same crew and the injury prone (Edler, Tanev, Sutter, Baertschi)
“Tyler Myers is my guy... I was taking to Scotty Bowman last night and he was bringing up his name, and saying he’s a big guy and big guy need big minutes to play, he is playing great for ya… and I agree with him… He’s been exceptional” - Bruce Boudreau

This is why it wouldnt suprise me to see the aquas bring in a specialist to replace the GM. Someone with a proven history of transitioning a young core into a contender. Benning hasn't so far proven that he has that unique skillset. He may still but his pro talent assessment and trade history hasnt been anything that stands out.

Improbably, against all odds...

...Jake has become one of my favourite canucks. I think it's his unpredictability - in any game he could score a crazy goal or knock a legit heavyweight on his ass.

He's a keeper for me.

Leivo and Baertschii, if you could get anything for them you may as well, Baer is the only winger other then BB who could hit 60 points but he needs to play 82 games to do so. Leivo is another tweener, like Goldy, but without Goldy's potential and without Jake's assholiness.

That intangible you like is why he has trade value. The reality is he doesnt have the hockey sense to play in the top 6 nor does he have that drive to paste guys on the walls with any consistency for a bottom 6 role. I think hes scared of having to throw down and account for his actions...

Ya, I guess. It was his MO even in the WHL.
Too bad, he's got skills. His heads just too diverted or something.

I hope one of the players they add has a deterrent factor because the line-up above is soft as butter.
Adding a Jamie Benn type to the top line would be ideal.

+1

Its clear that will be a weakness moving forward. Doc banging the drum about ferkland has some merit. Ferky is what we wish Virty could morph into but wont

He was part of the management team that transitioned Boston into a cup winning team though, I think he understands it better than you think. I agree they do need some more help in the front office.

I’d like to see the Canucks target pk subban again. I think Nashville would be interested in moving on from him with fabbro playing and the expansion draft coming around.
Subban edler
Free agent Hughes
Stetcher joulevi

Get some picks for Hutton, top 6 guy for Tanev (nylander/kapanen/toffoli), trade virtanen plus something for subban.

Im not advocating this I'm only saying it wouldn't suprise me given the impatient owners with a history of this kind of controversial move.

Personally i think hes doing a pretty decent job stocking up the cupborads with young players and his eye at the draft has been tip top.
