Career milestones 2018/19

Post by Per »

Even if Pettersson's season ended yesterday, which I certainly hope it did not, he would still leave a mark as one of the best rookies Vancouver has seen.

He currently is tied for ninth in most goals in a rookie season:
Bure 34
Linden 30
Boeser 29
Ververgaert 26
Blight 25
Sundström 23
Gillis 23
Hlinka 23
Pettersson 22
Ward 22
Tannahill 22

He has scored more GWG than any Vancouver rookie:
Pettersson 7
Bure 6
Sundström 5

He is the only Canucks rookie ever to score above 1.00 PPG

And he is currently 15th in points scored in a rookie season.

Hats off!

With 21 games remaining Pettersson is standing at 26 goals and 54 Points.

He needs one point to tie Boeser's rookie season, two to beat it.
Six points to tie Hlinka & Bure, seven to beat them.

In goals scored he is currently 3 behind Boeser, 4 behind Linden and 8 behind Bure.

Eight goals in 21 games. Can he do it? Hells yeah! :drink:

While Markström has improved dramatically this season, it is still a long way to the top:

Total wins for a canuck goalie:

1 Roberto Luongo 252
2 Kirk McLean.... 211
3 Richard Brodeur 126
4 Dan Cloutier.... 109
5 Gary Smith....... 72
6 Jacob Markstrom 70
7 Ryan Miller..... 64
8 Cory Schneider.. 55
9 Glen Hanlon..... 43
10 Alex Auld....... 39

And when it comes to wins in one season, you need more than 30 to even make the top dozen. Jacob has 22 so far, and had a total of 23 last year...

1 2006/07 47 Roberto Luongo
2 2009/10 40 Roberto Luongo
3 1991/92 38 Kirk McLean
4 2010/11 38 Roberto Luongo
5 2007/08 35 Roberto Luongo
6 2003/04 33 Dan Cloutier
7 2008/09 33 Roberto Luongo
8 2002/03 33 Dan Cloutier
9 2005/06 33 Alex Auld
10 1974/75 32 Gary Smith
11 2011/12 31 Roberto Luongo
12 2001/02 31 Dan Cloutier

So, I guess it is safe to conclude that Roberto Luongo is still by far the best goalie to ever take the crease for Vancouver.

Which is also confirmed by all time GAA (as a Canuck):
1 Cory Schneider.. 2.20
2 Roberto Luongo.. 2.36
3 Dan Cloutier...... 2.42
4 Andrew Raycroft. 2.42
5 Eddie Läck ........ 2.43
6 Johan Hedberg... 2.51
7 Peter Skudra...... 2.57
8 Bob Essensa....... 2.68
9 Ryan Miller........ 2.69
10 Curtis Sanford... 2.69
11 Jacob Markstrom 2.73
12 Arturs Irbe ....... 2.73

I mean, OK, in this category Schneider could give him a run for the money, but Schneider was always the backup.
That's a slightly different situation. Most games he ever played in one season for the Canucks was 33.

Meanwhile, Alex Edler (aka the Elder) has risen to become the D-man with most Points in a Canuck uniform:

Rk Player______ GP: G: A: TP: +/- PIM PPG
1 Alexander Edler 796 89 265 354 -41 531 0.44
2 Mattias Ohlund. 770 93 232 325 _+9 756 0.42
3 Jyrki Lumme…… 579 83 238 321 +21 379 0.55
4 Dennis Kearns... 677 31 290 321 -155 386 0.47
5 Doug Lidster…… 666 65 242 307 -87 526 0.46
6 Kevin Bieksa….. 597 56 185 241 +22 879 0.40
7 Sami Salo……….. 566 74 162 236 +78 202 0.42
8 Ed Jovanovski.… 434 57 177 234 _-3 536 0.54
9 Rick Lanz………… 417 56 171 227 -78 331 0.54
10 Kevin McCarthy 352 51 148 199 -13 388 0.57

He is still trailing Öhlund in goals scored and Kearns in assists, but reigns supreme when it comes to total points and games played.
His +/- stats suck, but not quite as bad as Kearns, Lidster or Lanz.

Every time I see a list like this I always wonder, how good would have Ohlund been without that eye injury. Oh, what could have been. Still think he was our best D man ever. Edler and Jovo would probably round out my top 3.

Hon. mentions go to Salo and Lumme.

This list accentuates how we've never had a top end offensive dman...ever. Its a collection of above average 40 point defenseman...

Probably directly relative to the number of stanley cups hanging in the rafters

Fair point.

Also, I think Lumme is sadly forgotten when people talk about Canuck d-men. Best point per game average of the lot.

And Salo is in a league of his own when it comes to +/-.
Sure, it's a pretty flawed stat, but I still think it tells us something.
Lumme, Bieksa and Öhlund are the only others in this list to have a positive +/-, and even if you combine their numbers, they as a trio do not even come near Salo.

Too bad he seemed to suffer from brittle bone disease. :(

Lumme is my favourite on that list. He had a leaning back, dippsy-doodle skating style that was awesome.

I think we only need to call 2, perhaps 3 more dudes to have Horvat skate with 30 different wingers in 1 season.. is that a milestone?? :D

As Edler, the current elder of the team, recently reached the 800 game mark, I figured it could be worthwhile to revisit
Most games played as a Canuck:

Rk Player……………….. GP
_1 Henrik Sedin_____ 1330
_2 Daniel Sedin_____ 1306
_3 Trevor Linden____ 1140
_4 Stan Smyl________ 896
_5 Markus Näslund___ 884
_6 Alexandre Burrows 822
_7 Alexander Edler__ 801
_8 Harold Snepsts___ 781
_9 Mattias Öhlund___ 770
10 Dennis Kearns____ 677

If Alex stays healthy and signs a new contract he could catch Burrows, Näslund and Smyl, but I think it will be really hard for anyone to reach the top three.

Tanev stands at 443 (31st) and Horvat at 364 (44th)

If Hughes or Teves can get in the lineup as a 7th defenceman this year, and do a couple, shifts with Horvat, he could still get that coveted "30 different wingers in a season" milestone!!

Yeah, funny how Jyrki "Jerky" Lumme never became a power skating coach after his NHL days. But, I bet he would have excelled at that CBC NHL player/Figure skating show a few years back.

I would be surprisingly comfortable with another 1000 games from Bo.
