Re: What to do with Hughes
Safe to say he's one of our top-8.
Sign him and tell him a spot is his to lose.

Re: What to do with Hughes
Yeah he can play with men already as seen with Team USA, he just needs to be used like Krug is in pure offensive mode, powerplay #1 unit, and tell Green to let him make some mistakes, but keep using him on that powerplay, offensive zone starts etc & don't crush his confidence. imo he seems like a pretty confident and well reasoned fellow, but his skills should shine through pretty quick.Island Nucklehead wrote: ↑Sun Jul 08, 2018 11:36 am Safe to say he's one of our top-8.

Yup. Play him to his strengths.
If he does decide to sign, I will be very curious to see how Green handles the numbers game on defense.

Don't forget about Juolevi...
Edler - Stecher
Juolevi - Tanev
Hughes - Gudbranson
Pouliot - Biega
Give Hughes lots of time on the number one power play.
Edler - Stecher
MDZ - Tanev
Juolevi/Hughes - Gudbranson
Juolevi/Hughes - Pouliot/Biega
Swap Juolevi/Hughes in/out, waive or trade one of Pouliot/Biega (Pouliot plays both sides) and of course trade Hutton.
Of course I'm assuming Stecher bounces back and even if so, I wouldn't give him much/any special teams time.
(Edler would continue to receive time on both of course)
The day Juolevi and Hughes both become everyday players, shop MDZ...

Re: What to do with Hughes
Hughes is a takeaway king. He has an underrated defensive game and i am pretty sure he will grab a top 4 roster spot this fall or fall 2019. The only question is if this is the year
If you need air...call it in
Re: What to do with Hughes
Yeah I think Green will prefer his bro MDZ to stay, he loves his gritty game even though he's not the sharpest tool in the shed defensively.

VERY INTERESTING, things that make you go hmmm, the Quinn Hughes 2018 summer story continues to unfold. One last Comets related tidbit. I asked the Canucks most recent first-round pick, Quinn Hughes, if signing with the Canucks and starting the year in Utica would be a no-go for him. He responded by saying that a lot of great players have played in the AHL and went on to list Duncan Keith and Erik Karlsson as examples and that if he had to play there that he would do that as well. He followed up by saying that he was going to talk with his family, the team and his advisors and they would come up with the right decision.

Do you want to watch Hughes make rookie mistakes or the lil'trojan make rookie mistakes?

Okay, on third thought...
Edler - Tanev
Juolevi - Gudbranson
Hughes - Bieksa
Pouliot - Stecher
Sign Bieksa to a one-year contract, waive Biega - he'll likely clear and be available as a callup.
Trade MDZ and Hutton for mid-round picks.

Re: What to do with Hughes
I'd like to see Hughes turn pro without a guaranteed roster spot. He might not be NHL ready, but he is AHL ready, with or without a club making competition concessions for player development. And while I think there are several advantages to playing in the NCAA rather than the CHL (disadvantages, too, but for many, it is the right call), there are none as compared with the AHL from a club's perspective unless (1) a prospect isn't getting the right kind of ice in the pros; or (2) the prospect needs to develop more than the game (talking here mostly about maturity, etc.). Even in scenario (1), clubs will want to get kids into their pro funnel if they don't have confidence in the NCAA program. We don't know much about issue (2), but the kid strikes me as already mentally mature but rink rat uninterested in anything else. In which case, get on the bus!
In terms of what happens with the other contracts, I don't care too much. Edler and Tanev are good NHL players; Gudbrandson and MDZ are good enough. If Hughes Juolevi make the best 5-6 (though don't pair them together), let it be so. But both can benefit from some time in Utica if that's what makes sense at the time. Hutton, Stetcher, Pouliot -- all might develop into something more, but the likelihood for each is pretty low. Hutton's already on a downward trajectory. This has been two seasons of healthy-scratch caliber play; last year, Hutton added to his game an all-time-level of indecision, so whatever physical shortcoming he has (Kyle Wellwood diet?), he's done if he can't get back the mental processing. Stetcher is a gamer but lacks a single skill that can offset the limitations in his game that are apparent. Pouliot got his chance last year and showed some things that make you understand why he was once a highly rated prospect but mostly showed himself to be unconfident and mistake prone (partly do to that lack of confidence). You can't survive in the NHL and be tentative.
Biega, on the other hand, belongs in the NHL -- even if its to be in the Press Box most nights. I'm not saying he's better than the other three, but he's a guy that can spend 4 weeks as a healthy scratch, then play 3 games to spell for injuries/illnesses, and look like he's been playing all season. There is a value in that, a value in guys who have low ceilings but high floors -- you know what you will get and its good enough for part time work.

Re: What to do with Hughes
Gifting Hughes that roster spot without earning it wouldnt be a good thing at all. From his interviews he repeatedly deferreded the decision to a later time when prodded. Obviously this was the plan before he came and likely orchestrated by the father and/or agent. I have zero issue with this and it looks like the kid will easily be comfortable with the spotlight of playing in a canadian market...a handy quality for a young player about to dominate the NHL within a few years.
My gut tells me he goes back to college and thats probably more than fine. The team is still a year from being out of the basement most likely and fishing that many pucks out of your net isnt always a great way to start your career.
Besides...next summer when the Hughes brothers get reunited in Van, it will be the watershed moment we've all been waiting for so whats one more year?

Re: What to do with Hughes
I agree, however I can't help thinking there may be some fairly notable pressure from "WAY" up the ladder
to make all the big splashes at the teams disposal.
Ah well, maybe the Family will stay out of things. (they said they would)

And Mr Q. Hughes is skating with the NHL elite right now.B Campbell on Quinn Hughes: "An unbelievable skater. He'd be one of the best skaters in the NHL if you put him into a line-up right now, not just on Vancouver. He'd keep up with McDavid even if McDavid had a head of speed. You see a bit of Niedermayer in him, a rover player."
Kevin Woodley: Hughes is skating with McDavid (and Tavares and younger brother Jack, among others) at a Power-Edge Pro Camp in Toronto this week; second year there with McDavid

Re: What to do with Hughes
The Canucks won’t gift him a spot and nor is Hughes asking for that. He’s simply said his preference is to play in the NHL and he leans towards NCAA over Utica. But he has always said he will play wherever the Canucks ask him to play.
Benning has also said, whenever asked, that he’d like to get him signed after they evaluate him further. But they really won’t be able to evaluate him much further before he has to commit to returning to the NCAA.
The talk they have may be about Utica should he sign and they feel he needs to play there for a spell. Is he comfortable with that? Does he think it will help or hurt vs returning to the NCAA. It’s exactly because Benning can’t and won’t guarantee an NHL spot that we are in a holding pattern.
I also agree that ownership needs this spark to rekindle fan interest IN BUYING TICKETS. But the final decision will rest with. Benning.
The quote from Campbell was interesting. I had been thinking that Gudbranson may make a good D partner for Hughes. Gudbranson played his best hockey when paired with Campbell and someone like Hughes may help Gudbranson find his game again. He’d also be there to protect the kid.
