Why is that too late? Just because he's a 5OA, spending a few games in the farm team is bad? For crying out loud, Juolevi is only 20.Ronning's Ghost wrote: ↑Tue Oct 09, 2018 11:54 pmIt's already too late for that. I'll be happy enough if he contributes effectively on the Canucks at all this season.

I like Friedman, but he is honking on the crack pipe on this one. For as often as the 'trade and re-sign' talk is bantered about, how often does it actually happen?? Each team has a guy or 2 every year that it gest said about, and 99% of the time, a guy that gets traded, stays gone.Friedman said the team could move Edler as a rental to a contender, then re-sign him in the offseason
Heck, even if did, the other team would know that Edler has no interest in resigning, and that would lower his trade value considerably.. like we would be lucky to get a 4th in a rental situation. The days of big spenders and draft picks flying around at TDD are long gone. This day and age (the salary cap era), draft picks are WAY more valuable than they used to be, as most teams are trying to compete through superior drafting, opposed to signing high priced fee agents.
The 'Chain of Command' is the chain I am going to beat you with until you understand I am in charge.

I didn't say it was bad, I said it would not be quicker than anticipated. There are other D-men from his draft class already contributing in the NHL.Jovocop wrote: ↑Thu Oct 11, 2018 8:29 amWhy is that too late? True, but the bolded part I disagree with, a team would know this is just a rental but still would pay up handsomely, as he's a battled vet, top 2 big minute guy, been to the Stanley Cup finals game 7, won Gold with Sweden, he's a heavy hitter, can play in all special teams and chip in with scoring, that in itself is perfect for a contender wanting to get over the top in the playoffs.Madcombinepilot wrote: ↑Thu Oct 11, 2018 12:05 pmI like Friedman, but he is honking on the crack pipe on this one. And as you said when a player gets traded he's likely not coming back, meaning he could sign anywhere, and why not re-sign with the contender whom you grew familiar with? plus with Edler it's going to be one of his preferred teams thanks to his stranglehold on destination with the No-Trade Clause, likely a west coast team.
But with those traits of Edler, if a team doesn't want to pay up, I see the Canucks (even it torments Reef) re-signing Edler at least a couple more years, he's the backbone of the defense, you see the difference on how shittier the team is without him taking allll the minutes.
And if that's the case, Edler taking the hard minutes the next couple years while Hughes and Juolevi transition to the NHL grind is a great plan moving forward unless a contender comes in with a crazy offer that's hard to refuse, like what Boston got from LA in the Lucic deal, and I'd say Edler is a much more important piece to a Cup contender than Lucic was.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

They wont be trading Edler Skyo. They're already desperately weak on the back end.
Edler will re-sign for less and remain our top defenseman until Hughes takes that role. Might as well cuddle up to reef and Mëds for another 2 to 3 years of bitching

But Hughes will never take that role, never. A different and very dynamic role yes.Uncle dans leg wrote: ↑Fri Oct 12, 2018 9:56 am They wont be trading Edler Skyo. They're already desperately weak on the back end.

Hughes will bring speed in both getting the puck out and speed in getting back to break up plays, hopefully.
No matter how "chippy and nasty" he is, which can draw penalties, good. He wont scare guys.
But Edler has a demeanor that scares guys, (they are aware of him), present and future.
There is also the shot blocking Edler does without too much injury. Size does matter there.
Gaud! I hate sounding preachy. Sorry.

Easy now. Over the past 18 months I’ve been quite candid about my opinion on Edler. He’s our steadiest guy on the blueline.Uncle dans leg wrote: ↑Fri Oct 12, 2018 9:56 am They wont be trading Edler Skyo. They're already desperately weak on the back end.

He never achieved the heights that so many around here forecasted 9 years ago, and I said as much back then.....that he was not a stud defenseman because he didn’t have the mental poise under pressure situations. He’d be like Seabrook to Keith.....if he was paired with a partner like Karlsson or Burns.
I have been right about him all along. But I’ve cooled off on the “ship him out of town” line as he is actually good in his role for the time and place that this team is in. If he re-signs at $4M + change that’s great. But if his agent is gonna force things and shoot for the moon and demand a raise citing that Edler is playing 25 min per night and soooo important, then Benning needs to tell him to go ask another team for that kind of cash.

SKYO still trading our only 2 legitimate NHL Defenceman - Tanev and Edler?
Trust me, SKYO. Those two aren’t going anywhere
