The 2018 NHL Entry Draft

Post by SKYO »

2018 NHL draft will be held in Dallas.

Canucks are in the middle of a rebuild, with some quality prospects finally that are currently in development, we hope some can develop into pro's quicker than expected, but no pressure rookies!

Anyways I think it's a good time to acquire more picks for this draft - (butter-up Edler to waive that NTC soon) - which supposedly should be a deeper draft than this year, with some higher end choices at the top of the draft.

Here is draftsite's mock 2018 draft, https://www.draftsite.com/nhl/mock-draft/2018/ which changes a lot over the year:

Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

Prediction - Nucklefarm will spend the next 1-2 years after the 2018 draft lamenting how Benning should have drafted Brady Tkachuk instead of Jared McIsaac
“Tyler Myers is my guy... I was taking to Scotty Bowman last night and he was bringing up his name, and saying he’s a big guy and big guy need big minutes to play, he is playing great for ya… and I agree with him… He’s been exceptional” - Bruce Boudreau

Canucks will pull a Philadelphia and just miss out on the playoffs and then move way up to pick 2nd overall in the lottery

Yup when the Pittsburgh Penguins were tanking for their generational superstar's, Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby Malkin
What do you do when a 6’4″ QMJHL forward who scored 184 points in 66 games in his last underage season scores at a 282-point pace in his draft year? You tank — you tank as hard as you can. In the latter half of the 1983-84 season, the Pittsburgh Penguins and New Jersey Devils were in an unspoken, pitched battle for the bottom of the league and everybody knew it. While the Penguins would ultimately win out, sputtering to a 16-58-6 record (“good” for 38 points in the standings) to New Jersey’s 17-56-7 (41 points), the two teams were coming from distinctly different franchise backgrounds.

Even within the season, both teams were hurling accusations at one another for tanking, and Wayne Gretzky referred to the Devils as a “Mickey Mouse operation”

https://hockey-graphs.com/2015/04/06/th ... s-1983-84/
While tanking is a hot topic in this year’s NHL, the act of tanking is as old as the idea of granting the worst teams a shot at the #1 pick in the draft. Case in-point: the 1983-84 Pittsburgh Penguins, routinely considered the most overt of tankers in NHL history.

While the Penguins’ GM of the time, Eddie Johnston, has never admitted to tanking on purpose, coach Lou Angotti said they did, and even recounted a game against the Rangers when Johnston stormed into the coach’s office to complain about a 3-1 lead after the 1st period. It was also Johnston who traded away top defenseman Randy Carlyle for no readily active players 50 games in and sent relatively strong performing goaltender Roberto Romano down to the AHL in favor of the identifiably-worse Vincent Tremblay.

As I was snooping around for more articles on the 1983-84 season, I found an article comparing that tank to the Penguins’ tank attempts for the #1 pick in 2003-04. They wanted Ovechkin, but ended up with Evgeni Malkin

https://hockey-graphs.com/2015/04/03/nh ... -penguins/

And everyone knows the Oilers TANK god mode stories, anyways the odds of winning the draft lotto back in the good ol' days was like flipping a coin, now it's like winning the lotto 6/49...just as the canucks started their rebuild, anyways we could have an uber talented center in Pettersson in a few years, so it's good we have a good scouting crew/GM....in the long run having a solid management team will lead to success, not as immediate as a team that won the 1st overall pick(s), but we could have a really well built franchise in a few years with quality assets to make moves down the road, and that's what you want, some solid trading chips to find pieces you need to complete your chemistry/balance in a Cup winning team.

Build down the middle, get some game breaker scoring talent, find two or three dmen to keep forever, get a goalie to get hot at just the right time before they get overpaid in the Cup window time.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

How can anyone predict that for us when on paper Vegas looks like a lock to be 31st by a solid 20 points.

updates on some the 2018 draft prospects.

The top two, Ras Dahlin looking like a future star, RW Andrei Svechnikov (6-2, 186)..

https://www.nhl.com/news/rasmus-dahlin- ... -291520870
Among the A-rated North American skaters who could be selected in the first round are defensemen Quinton Hughes (5-10, 174) of the University of Michigan (Big Ten), Jared McIsaac (6-1, 195) of Halifax in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Ryan Merkley (5-11, 170) of Guelph in the Ontario Hockey League; centers Joseph Veleno (6-1, 195) of Saint John (QMJHL) and Ryan McLeod (6-2, 200) of Mississauga (OHL); right wings Oliver Wahlstrom (6-1, 205) of USA Hockey's Under-18 National Team Development Program (USHL) and Filip Zadina (6-0, 196) of Halifax (QMJHL); left wings Brady Tkachuk (6-3, 196) of Boston University in Hockey East and Benoit-Olivier Groulx (6-1, 192) of Halifax (QMJHL).

"Tkachuk is a throwback; he has the skill set, hands, shot and net-front play to be a real high-end goal scorer in the NHL," said USNTDP U-18 coach Seth Appert. "Some players hit because they know it's part of the game and the coach wants them to go hit to create a turnover. Tkachuk absolutely craves physical contact."

Halifax may have lost center Nico Hischier, who is expected to remain with the New Jersey Devils after being selected No. 1 in the 2017 NHL Draft, but they have three others projected high on most 2018 draft boards in Zadina, McIsaac, and Groulx.

Zadina, selected No. 10 in the 2017 CHL Import Draft, has eight points (three goals, five assists) and 14 shots on goal in five games this season. Originally chosen No. 4 in the 2016 CHL Import Draft by Vancouver (WHL), he opted to stay in the Czech Republic and had two points (one goal, one assist) in 25 games for Dynamo Pardubice last season.

"Zadina is adapting quickly and putting up points," said Troy Dumville of NHL Central Scouting. "He's a smart player with very good puck skills, vision and finish around net."

Veleno, the first player from the QMJHL to be granted exceptional player status, was selected No. 1 by Saint John in the 2015 QMJHL draft as a 15-year-old. He has four points (one goal, three assists) and 10 shots on goal in five games this season, his third with the Sea Dogs.

Among the eight A-rated players from Europe, Dahlin, center Rasmus Kupari (6-1, 183) of Karpat Jr. (Finland), center Isac Lundestrom (6-0, 185) of Lulea (Sweden), and defenseman Adam Boqvist (5-11, 168) of Brynas (SWE) have received a lot of attention.

Boqvist, the brother of Devils prospect Jesper Boqvist, had eight points (one goal, seven assists) to help Sweden to a bronze medal at the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. He is almost as skilled but not as mature as Dahlin, according to Stubb.
*side note* - imo since the Canucks will likely improve this season, and won't be ranked high in the draft lotto again probably, JB should try to do a hard task and trade with a bubble team to acquire their 1st, so the Canucks can get a couple chances in the draft lotto since they have notorious bad luck in that system since it's inception, more cracks at the can.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.
