The Dude is most certainly an angry man. 10,000 posts of hate and vitriol fueled by a coke withdrawal, a huge gut, matts of back hair, a receding hairline and legs that look like they should be sticking out of a birdsnest. Start smoking pot again Dude and mellow the fuck out ya grumpy asshole.

Sundin would have cost valuable cap space... had he accepted Gillis' ridiculous offer.Uncle dans leg wrote:Why r u trippin balls about this? He didn't cost assets only cash from stinkin rich people.
Sundin would have had a $10M cap hit for the 2009-10 season.
The salary cap that year was just $56.8M
Sundin would have had the highest cap-hit in the league, try to fit that on your Canucks:
http://stats.nhlnumbers.com/teams/VAN?year=2010
That cap-hit would have RUINED us.
As I have shown, it turned out most Canuckers didn't want Sundin back for 2009-10.
And the few that wanted him back wanted him at $2.5M maximum.
If he had accepted Gillis' offer, Sundin would have made $10M in 2009-10
... making him the most overpaid player in NHL history.
He would have had by far the highest cap hit in the league that year.
This can't be overstated: It would have R U I N E D your Vancouver Canucks.
It would have derailed the team Gillis was putting together
... would have changed Canuck history for the worse.
It's pretty cray that anyone defends Gillis in this matter.
If that $20M offer was accepted it surely would have resulted in Gillis getting canned a few years earlier.

They would have wasted at least $7.5M in a $56.8 salary cap world.Blob Mckenzie wrote:Lol at how cap space was valuable in 2009-10 but not now. Fucking hilarious!!!!
How does that compare to anything going on "now".
You whine about a little cap-space now
... but the massive waste of cap-space was okay then?
There is no way to defend Gillis' ludicrous $20M offer...

Your Canucks wouldn't have been able to afford a few of their star players (did you check out the link?)
How do they "win a cup" with some of those star players removed?
Hell, a person could argue "No Presidents Trophies and No 2011 Playoff Run".
The fact he (miraculously) didn't accept the Tard Offer, doesn't excuse Gillis from offering it.

The one-year contract he ended up signing was fine.Blob Mckenzie wrote: He signed a one year deal for 8.6 million prorated. Again.... I don't think you were that upset about it back in the day.,
But we're talking about Gillis' idiotic $20M offer.
Most players would have taken that and laughed all the way to the bank.

But he didn't so it's a moot point. As I said if I remember correctly you liked the signing. It's not a moot point because all this time we've been discussing the imbecilic $20M offer.Blob Mckenzie wrote: But he didn't so it's a moot point.
Nice to see you concede it was a Tard Offer.
I liked what he ended up signing for.Blob Mckenzie wrote: As I said if I remember correctly you liked the signing.
I never liked Gillis' reckless original offer.
Some players took advantage of Gillis' irresponsible offers.
Yup, Gillis handed out some bad contracts indeed.
One could argue, in the end, some of those Tard Contracts did him in.

Re: 2017 Development Camp
Doc, if you're going to play "what if" over the two year offer, you also have to play "what if Sundin played the full season?"
He was coming off a 32g/72 point season, he'd averaged 30g/77 points over his previous 3 seasons and wasn't missing many games due to injury.
When Gillis made the offer, Sundin was a star player at the top of his game. Six months of playing poker and chilling at the cottage changed that, I have no doubt.

Re: 2017 Development Camp
Who the fuck cares about Mats Sundin? The offer was ridiculous. It was attention-grabbing. And it likely helped convince Mats to come eventually. Remember the leaves, Canadiens and Rangers were all after him too.
Mats came for half a year, then he left. That was nearly 10 years ago.

Yes, but don't you see how that ties in with this year's development camp? C'mon, IN - make the connection!Island Nucklehead wrote:Mats came for half a year, then he left. That was nearly 10 years ago.

20m was the offer in the summer that he didnt accept and as pointed out semi-retired to play cards and get fucked up at the lake. He was on record as saying he hadn't been working out but with persistence the canucks coaxed him out for one last hurrah.
Also you cant quantify with numbers what his presence meant to emerging superstars H+D as well as Kesler. He was a hockey legend and inspired the pack of wild swedes that were the heart of the soon to be contender, as well as launching them into art ross trophies. I would say he most certainly helped push those 2 into the upper echelon of the NHL.
Considering how adept MG and Gilman were at fiddling the numbers I am sure they would've carried on as such and found a way.
Straw grasper!
