Yep. For a non-UFA.

UFA years are UFA years.

Sutter's contract was essentially a UFA contract...
Yep. For a non-UFA.
WTF? :hmmm:

I'm trying to be kind here, Benning signed Sutter to a UFA contract!

I know that you are familiar with the term "UFA years"

... well every single year on that contract was a "UFA year". Image

Sutter could have refused to sign with Vancouver and become a UFA instead.

Are you deliberately being obtuse?

This conversation started when ESQ compared Sutter's contract to other UFAs.

You said that wasn't a fair comparison.

You were wrong bro.

Sutter is a great complimentary piece on a good team.

On a bad (read: rebuilding) team, not so much

(though I hear his mentoring skills are top notch)

In two years when your Canucks are a good team you sir will be in love with Mr Sutter.

Oh it's true!!

:wiggle:

PS: Since his arrival Mr Sutter has been top-6 in points-per-game and by far our best faceoff man

Sticking to the two-year timeline without even knowing the draft outcome ? Very bold.

Well...

IF they win the lotto and take Nolan Patrick, his injuries have hidden his top end potential to a degree so you might get something special once hes 100%.

If that scenario comes true then it is forseeable theyre competing by then. Only if those 2 scenarios come true though.

So count me as a cautious optimist subject to divine intervention.

Considering his icetime is top 2/3 that's wonderful!!!'

His "mentoring skills". LOL tells Goldobin to play with "grit and balls" when Brando has NEVER done this. "Excuse me can you channel your inner Cam Neely while I will play like Edith Bunker".

Hey, Edith worked hard. Her problem was she could never stick up for herself when people were mean.
Oh, wait. I get it.

Unrestricted Free Agency.

Who was Vancouver competing against for his services? This isn't Mike Gillis flying to Sweden to get the Sedins signed with a couple days to go, this is re-upping a guy who has a year left on his deal.

Will Bo Horvat's next deal be a UFA contract, because it covers a couple "UFA years"?

His agent was rightly comparing other Unrestricted Free Agency signings

... please, you aren't this dumb.

A player gets more $$ for each of the Unrestricted Free Agency years in his contract

... this is common knowledge.

Actually it is wonderful when you consider 2 of those minutes-per-game are spent killing penalties.

And like I say, he was by far our best faceoff man (hopefully he's teaching the kids)

ESQ is Sutter's Agent? ESQ is an excellent agent!

Sutter's contract is "essentially" a UFA contract, Virtanen is "essentially" a Gillis pick, the strategy is "essentially" rebuilding.

You know damn well that Sutter's agent (and Benning) were comparing UFAs contracts.

Pending UFAs get paid.

You know damn well Sutter's contract was a UFA contract for the purposes of this conversation.

But hey carry on in your save-face damage-control mode

... maybe folks won't notice what an ass you're making of yourself!

ESQ was comparing Sutter's contract to players signed as UFA's.
Looking at last season's UFA signings, his contract is far from the worst and is sort of middle-of-the-pack for market value.
So we're comparing a guy that signed a deal a year in advance of hitting UFA status, to players that could shop around and get the highest possible value and term from any bidder in the league. You're saying they're in "essentially" the same situation.

ESQ is saying Sutter's deal isn't bad, considering how much other players got in unrestricted free agency, which ignores that(1) Sutter was never in that position and (2) those deals are often some of the worst you'll see, and are (3) competitively negotiated. So yeah, his non-competitive contract extension is likely to look good by comparison.

If Sutter did hit UFA, and someone gave him $7M, would that vindicate Benning, or just make him less of an idiot than the other guy?

Essentially, the Canucks needed to sign Sutter or risk letting him walk for nothing the following summer. Not exactly a unique situation for any team, and certainly not the same as bidding for his services against other teams come July 1.
