Quite right!SKYO wrote:I will give Willie and Gulutzan this one pearl of wisdom, study lines of other teams, try to get line matches ready and notice weaknesses to exploit it. Notice what the other team is doing and counter it quickly.
Don't be afraid to play the youth a couple times in critical situations.
Lidster I don't know what his skillset is, but he's always in the shadows in the coaching area.
When it mattered, earlier in the season, I saw no signs of the opposition having been scouted much.
That will have to get one whole shit load better...

Agree. The idea that you can ignore what your opponent is doing or is capable is naive and completely ridiculous. Reducing the ice time of your better players to ensure they aren't burnt out makes sense and you do that when you're out of a game or have a comfortable lead. Rolling four lines regardless of context is wilful stupidity.micky107 wrote:Quite right!SKYO wrote:I will give Willie and Gulutzan this one pearl of wisdom, study lines of other teams, try to get line matches ready and notice weaknesses to exploit it. If you are developing youth, rolling four lines and allowing players to play in a variety situations is great.
Don't forget that the team played most of the season without a #2 centre while other longterm injuries forced young players into overextended roles.
Butt of coarse fancy stats are ignorant of reality.

They haven't had a legit # 2 centre since Kesler was traded. Horvat should develop into a top 2 line centre and maybe even a decent # 1. Sutter is a third line centre on a decent team.Topper wrote:If you are developing youth, rolling four lines and allowing players to play in a variety situations is great.

I only guillotine Desjardins if they are in danger of losing Green. Letting another team poach Green while hanging onto Desjardins would be idiotic.

Isn't Green's contract with the Canucks done after this season?Blob Mckenzie wrote: I only guillotine Desjardins if they are in danger of losing Green. Letting another team poach Green while hanging onto Desjardins would be idiotic.

I'm not sure. But if he wants to walk you keep him around and fire the runt. Ideally Green gets another season in the AHL , but I could see a team looking hard at him for an NHL job.Island Nucklehead wrote:Isn't Green's contract with the Canucks done after this season?Blob Mckenzie wrote: I only guillotine Desjardins if they are in danger of losing Green. So yeah, this is his contract year. Too bad, because if he had a year or two left the Canucks could play the LA Kings card and deny any other team talking with him.rats19 wrote:Signed a 3 year July 2013..Blob Mckenzie wrote:I'm not sure. I imagine Benning will want his own guy in there and Green will be allowed to walk.

Ding ding ding. Glad to see you're finally on the Benning plan.Blob Mckenzie wrote: Sutter is a third line centre on a decent team.
By the time this team is decent, or back to contender status, Sutter will undoublly be our third line centre. And by that time $4.4M for a 3rd line centre that helps you win the Cup will be a bargain!
Re: Willy D death watch...
It is really hard to say what the Bruins will do now.
They might, just might, axe Jullien.
If that does happen, Benning and Linden will make a play. A week should give an idea.
We may well lose Green because whether or not he is ready for a head NHL coaching job isn't the issue. The issue is he probably thinks he is and he may well have suitors calling or at least asking Trevor if they can speak with him.
Again, have to wait for a bit.
If WD is back, it will be a very, very short leash but then again, kind of depends what happens with the above mentioned...

I like a lot will depend on the exit interviews next week. If the players are behind him then I think it's a no brainer he is back. Both Linden and Benning have said as much, albeit Linden was more emphatic on the point while Benning was a little more cryptic. But if your leaders on the team, I'm speaking the Sedin's here, have his back he'll be back.
All indications I got from friends have been that the players like WD, like his systems and like that he rolls four lines. But certainly some of his decisions are questionable, some of his player choices are also questionable. To me that's his biggest problem, player deployment. And that's huge to me.
I don't know if we are ready for a more seasoned coach though. His mentoring and development of players might be just what we need for at least another year. As for Green, whose really looking this year? The past two years we have seen turnover in the coaching ranks but I'm not sure whose looking, that would want a rookie coach.
The only HW the Canucks need

Re: Willy D death watch...
Actually I think by next season he will be the third best center on the club. It still won't be a decent team, but with Horvat improving as much as he has he should be the better player by as early as next season.Aaronp18 wrote:Ding ding ding. No offence to Green, but no way Mgmt goes with another rookie coach if WD is let go. If Julien is fired he would be the way to go. Crow is going backwards unless we are drafting Matthews then maybe. Would not be surprised if WD stays. Not sure Aquamarine wants to dole out more money to a fired coach as Torts and the Professor are still on the books

The coach got us overachieving last year. No way is he at fault this year. Keep him around another year at the very least. He's doing a good job with developing the young'ns.RoyalDude wrote:No offence to Green, but no way Mgmt goes with another rookie coach if WD is let go. If Julien is fired he would be the way to go. If we suck worse next year too then we get another top 5 and fire him.
I love every move Jim Benning makes
