So typical as to how Canadians think about our good buddies down south.Hockey Widow wrote:They should go with something culturally American like the Gunners. Fits the military motif as well.

Hey guys: We don't all think that way! Forgive us!
Oh well, should get better over the next 4 years.
Thanks for pointing this out, Damon, I almost missed it....

Hey don't be so sensitive. Just go with the politically insensitive vibe of the times. Lets rename all the Canadian teams.micky107 wrote:So typical as to how Canadians think about our good buddies down south.Hockey Widow wrote:They should go with something culturally American like the Gunners. 2017 Expansion Draft
So I was just reading over the rules for the upcoming expansion draft and a couple of things I didn't realize jumped out at me.
1. We have to expose Markstrom.
iii) One goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.
2. There are at least two tough choices for Benning to make regarding our blueline (barring a trade).
3. Only NMC's have to be protected, nothing about NTC's. (But there is conflicting info here if you trust wikipedia).
So, Benning has to protect Huey, Duey, and Loui. That leaves 4 more forwards to choose from.
Horvat should obviously be at the top of those 4 names. A strong case can be made for Baertschi and Granlund at this point. So the question remains, does he protect Hansen or Sutter? I would protect Hansen and risk Sutter being claimed in order to clear some soon-to-be valuable cap space. Not that Sutter hasn't been good for us, just that with Bo needing a new contract, our goaltending situation up in the air, a few other raises due, and the recapture penalty of one Roberto Luongo looming ever closer, it makes sense to have some space right now.
On the blueline Edler, Tanev, Gudbranson, Sbisa, Hutton, Biega, and Tryamkin may all be eligible under the following....
* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits)
Hutton and Tryamkin (thanks to that special deal last year) will both have completed playing their 2nd contract year. So I'm unsure if that makes them eligible for a claim by Las Vegas (hopefully someone can clarify that for me). I hope that I'm wrong because that makes us ripe for a claim off of our blueline.
So who do you protect here? Edler, Gudbranson, and Tanev, are both valuable assets that would see raked over the coals for losing with no return. If Benning has zero plan to trade any of them, then I sure hope Hutton and Tryamkin are exempt. That leaves Sbisa and Biega as fodder.
So now we are back to the Pizza-Boy problem. He's playing really well, and would be an excellent anchor for the bottom pairing, and a bargain-bin option if he can play in the #4 spot regularly, or reliably in case of injuries.
As was pointed out to me (thanks Heir Doktor), UFA's don't need protection and can be re-signed after the expansion draft. So question marks like Miller, Burrows, Larsen, and Skille, don't need to be worried about (especially the latter pair).
So does our list look like....
F: Hank, Dank, Eriksson, Horvat, Granlund, Baertschi, Hansen
D: Elder, Tanev, Gudbranson
G: None as Miller is UFA
Or do trades have to be made to accommodate keeping Tryamkin and Hutton?
Apologies if there's another thread this should be merged with, but I didn't see one on the first couple of pages.

Bachman can be exposed.
Tryamkin and Hutton exempt.
This is your friend.
Sedin, Sedin, Eriksson, Sutter, Horvat, Baertschi, Hansen, Edler, Tanev, Gudbranson, Markstrom.
Oh no, we lose Granlund or Sbisa. NBD.

When you look at the lists, on D, you see Vegas should get a few good Dman to select. Maybe Doc is right and Sbisa is safe

Re: 2017 Expansion Draft
Las Vegas should be able to field a pretty decent hockey team. Well, a middling team but I am almost certain their first season will be miles better than the losing cultures of Colorado and Phoenix.
