Pick Your Least Favourite Benning Move
Let's turn those those frowns upside down - at least we can laugh at our team and commiserate!
Poll offers 10 options - I did not include Willie Desjardins signing, Vrbata signing, Richardson signing, Dorsett trade, Forsling for Clendening trade, Dorsett re-signing, or Patrick McNally trade... I tried to pick the most dislikeable moves...!

(by the way, I know the Sbisa re-signing will win - but hey!)

Re: Pick Your Least Favourite Benning Move
Even though I voted Sbisa re-signing, those 2nd and 3rd round pick trades really suck.
Using the Anaheim 3rd round to trade for Derek Dorsett?
Wait - here's one that's worse - acquiring Tampa's 2nd round 2014 only to use it to get Linden Vey
Then using the 3rd round 2016 to get concussion-ruined Andrey Pedan (bet you forgot about that one!- but yeah Benning let's stockpile picks and get younger...)
Oh, and 2nd round 2015 for reclamation project, small, prima donna Sven Baertschi. Good one.
So - already traded away the 3rd and 5th in 2016 - while getting back a 2nd and 7th.

Re: Pick Your Least Favourite Benning Move
You need the Miller signing on there . For me it's #2 between the Sbisa signing and the trade for Vey . I laugh at all of the Benning apologists who say he's going to be a player next July but they gloss over the extra ten million puked away on a bad goalie and a # 6/7 d man . Those contracts which are among the leagues worst don't expire until 2017 and 2018 . They are more than fucking place holders .

OK - I eliminated the Dorsett trade, and put in the Miller signing...Blob Mckenzie wrote:You need the Miller signing on there.
Personally I give him a mulligan on the Miller signing, because going into your first season as a GM with Lack and Markstrom as two unproven starters seems too risky - signing Miller guaranteed at least NHL calibre goaltending.

Re: Pick Your Least Favourite Benning Move
I blame the owners re Miller. Benning was ordered to "try and make the playoffs" and I'm sure he felt he had no choice but to secure a solid goalie to acheive this. If the goal had been to "rebuild" the team then Benning could have gone with Lack and let it play out.Southern_Canuck wrote:OK - I eliminated the Dorsett trade, and put in the Miller signing...Blob Mckenzie wrote:You need the Miller signing on there.

A second for Sven made no sense to me at the time, but know knowing the Zach injury, it makes more sense.
The Clendenning and McMillian deals deconstruct looked prescient when injuries reached the lineup in January and February.
But most have forgotten that shoestring lineup that somehow held together. They also forget how well Sbisa played during that song with Hamhuis, Tanev, Bieksa and Edler spending extended time in the trainers room.
Same as they have forgotten the games Miller sole out steadied the team with confidence unseen in a Canuck goalie in history.

Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.
I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

Re: Pick Your Least Favourite Benning Move
The Benning era has thus far been pretty hit or miss in terms of signings.
The Vrbata deal was fantastic. It's too bad we didn't pick him up in 2009.
The Miller signing made sense at the time. Was a rookie GM really going to go into his first season in charge of a team with a Lack/Markstrom combo (combined 88 NHL games between the two of them)? Probably not. You could argue that there were shorter term options, though. Let's see how Miller & Markstrom work out.
The Tanev re-signing was excellent.
The Dorsett extension was mediocre. He's a guy who brings things to the table we need, but that's an expensive 4th line Jimbo is putting together.
The Sbisa re-signing was dreadful.
The recent extensions to Vey, Markstrom and Kenins were no brainers.
Fedun and Bachman fill needs in Utica.
The Weber signing for $1.5M is solid for a guy who will put up points on the PP and probably will play in our top 4. Not qualifying paid him, obviously. This is a fair 'show me' deal, which I like a lot, and either paves the way for a long term extension or buys time until Clendening is ready.
The Bartkowski deal is fine for a depth guy. Not sure where he fits in on the left side, but Jimbo probably isn't done moving pieces. I hope Benning doesn't punt Corrado because he wasn't one of his picks or whatever, because he has top four upside IMO.

Damn it. Can I change my vote to Sbisa? I saw Miller's contract and just had a knee-jerk reaction....

Sbisa totally. I don't get anyone being upset about Miller's contract? It will be over at just the right time and no six million dollar player was bringing this core back to life.
I can't blame Benning for Gillis giving NTC's to okay players like Bieksa.
The value of picks seem lost on people, but I have to admit that Vey for a second seems a little much...
Honestly, at this point, Benning's record in the draft matters way more than how he drubs out the fossils. To be determined.

Re: Pick Your Least Favourite Benning Move
Benning seems determined to over pay to get modified NTC or no NTC. He has also signed a number of one year show me contracts. All four of our goalies have 2 years on their contracts.
Next year, if he gets to FA, he will go hard after Lucic. That one scares me because I think he gives Lucic his retirement contract.
Just time to sit back, see what prospect camp brings, enjoy the main camp, and hope for the best. How about opening the season with back to back wins over the Flames? That'll get the fans back up on their feet

Re: Pick Your Least Favourite Benning Move
The reason I didn't like the Miller signing had more to do with I wanted the rebuild to start last season.
I didn't even like the Vrbata signing strictly because of letting the prospects play, of course not that siging looks freaking great and I put it around 95% that Vrbata will be traded by TDD.
I just don't get the Sbisa signing, should of just qualified him and see what he would do this year.
Some of his trades - if that is all he can get then time to move on. None of the players moved would of brought anything back to make this team immediately better. Even a 2nd for Lack, the chances of a 2nd making the NHL is slim. Thus the reason why I liked the Sven trade because Sven still has a better chance of making the team than any player the Nucks would of drafted with that pick.

I keeping looking for choice #11
- Accept the job offer to be GM of the Vancouver Canucks
(just kidding - so far Benning's results have exceeded expectations - despite our complaints he still had a 101 point season. Regular season and playoffs are the only criteria I use. What we think about individual decisions is meaningless - only the results matter - SO GO GET US A 15/16 CUP DANG IT)

Okay but we have seen what happens when you throw a bunch of kids out there on their own in Edmonton. You need to insulate them and I can see very clearly why playing in front of a veteran goalie could give young skaters more confidence etc. Lack was not someone anyone expected to be a starter. Vrbata is a filler for a couple years. There's no one he's blocking.Reefer2 wrote:The reason I didn't like the Miller signing had more to do with I wanted the rebuild to start last season.

Kesler had to be moved and had an NTC, Lack was going to get expensive and wasn't near the top of the shelf on the goalie market, and Bieksa is an old, brittle declining asset who will walk in a year. He was basically forced to make a move or was moving a pretty middling asset.
