The Defence
I think some interesting decisions will be made in the off-season on the future of the Canuck's defence... (age is as of Oct 1, 2015)
Currently under contract for 2015-16 (or beyond):
L - Edler (29) $5M until 2019
R - Bieksa (34) $4.6M until 2016
L - Hamhuis (32) $4.5M until 2016
...
L - Pedan (22) $925 until 2016
L - Cederholm (20) $667 until 2017
R - Blain (23) $588 until 2016
L - McEneny (21) $585 until 2017
RFA in Summer 2015
L - Sbisa (25) $2.175M
R - Tanev (25) $2M
R - Clendening (22) $925k
R - Weber (27) $850k
R - Corrado (22) $600k
L - Andersson (24) $600k
L - Stanton (26) $550k
UFA in Summer 2015
R - Sanguinetti (27) $600k
R - Biega (27) $600k
What about?
R - Subban (20) unsigned
L - Tryamkin (21) unsigned
L - Hutton (22) unsigned
L - McNally (23) unsigned
There could be a log jam in the AHL - and it is never good to ice a predominantly rookie pro defence...
My guess?
RFAs: Well, they'll sign Tanev, Clendening and Corrado for sure... I'm not so certain about Sbisa, Weber, and Stanton - but since Sbisa was a Benning addition, he probably gets signed. Weber, Stanton and for sure Andersson are let go.
UFAs: Probably try to keep both Sanguinetti and Biega for veteran presence in the AHL with NHL call-up ability.
Unsigned: I think they'll sign Subban and Hutton. Maybe McNally somehow gets another year of NCAA eligibility and I think Tryamkin stays in the KHL.
NHL
Edler - Tanev
Hamhuis - Bieksa
Sbisa - Clendening
Corrado
AHL
Pedan - Sanguinetti
Subban - Biega
Hutton - Blain
Cederholm

Re: The Defence
I hope they don't let Stanton go. He is a decent 5-6 guy and has a mean streak. But you are right, someone has to go. Clendening has not impressed me, I don't think he brings anything Weber doesn't bring. Corrado hasn't had a good long run to see where he fits. I doubt they bring Bieksa back after his contract is up. Maybe they convince him this summer to pick a team and try to trade him to free up the log jam.
Tough decisions ahead. Benning has done a good job bringing in players with now waiver eligibility left!

Re: The Defence
Do not get the love-in for Stanton. A mean streak? I close my eyes when he fights cause he's a knock out waiting to happen if and when he does fight which is never. Can't hit like a truck like Sbisa. His decision making is slow as hell, low skill set, low IQ, terrible skating with the puck and moving it out of trouble, he's awful. If you value him at 5-6 then your D depth is shite. He should be in the minor leagues. Get rid of him

Subban - JB said he will sign him (expected to be in Utica next season)Southern_Canuck wrote: What about?

Tryamkin - Contract-locked into KHL for one more season.
Hutton - Expected to be in Utica next season
McNally - Going to play one more year in college (confirmed).
Disagree with the first part, agree with the latter.Southern_Canuck wrote: There could be a log jam in the AHL - and it is never good to ice a predominantly rookie pro defence...
Tommernes + Andersson are going back to Sweden for sure... or so I heard.
And like I say, Tryamkin will be in Russia, McNally in college.
Negrin + Ehrhardt will be let go..
Cederholm (along with Liberati and Stewart) will remain in junior as over-agers.
You mentioned Sanguinetti + Biega will be UFAs.
I'm hoping they can convince Biega he's a career AHLer and to sign a one-way contract with your rich Canucks
(I would say the same about Sanguinetti, but I heard he isn't happy here = NHL or back to KHL next year).
As for Canucks, with Weber, Clendening, and Corrado all being RH, I think one will be trade bait.
(I'm guessing Corrado)
Sbisa needs to be qualified at $2.9M minimum - too much money + too much suckage = buh-bye.
(dunno, maybe they can convince Sbisa to sign here for what he would get as a free agent?)
Sbisa probably replaced with a veteran 3rd-pairing ASSHOLE....
Stanton will come cheap as a #8 guy.
NHL
Edler (L) - Tanev (R)
Hamhuis (L) - Bieksa (R)
ASSHOLE (L) - Weber (R)
Stanton (L) - Clendening (R)
(hopefully Clendening takes Weber's job eventually)
AHL
Pedan (L) Subban (R)
Hutton (L) Biega (R)
McEneny (L) Blain (R)
Lafranchise (L)
I'm not much of a prospects guy btw, just running with the notes I accumulate in my travels.

Re: The Defence
Quick googling says YES.Hockey Widow wrote:Didn't Tommernes already return?
Thank you ma'am, some of my notes are a little dated (and I don't follow Utica much).
Andersson is expected to follow Tommernes to Sweden.

Re: The Defence
'asshole' I bet JB goes to one of his former players in Boston and signs UFA McQuaid, perfect player to play with either Weber/Clenny/Corrado on the bottom pairing.Strangelove wrote:

In a year or two be interesting to see Russians Pedan + Tryamkin form a pairing.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.
Re: The Defence
Re: assholishness. Douglas Murray spent this season in Germany, but has already returned to North America with the pronounced goal of returning to the NHL. Not the best blue liner there is, but extensive NHL and international experience and a mean streak a mile wide. Could he be of interest?

Re: The Defence
veteran, mean streak all sounds good
but very slow...
and he's 34
Would he be Murray Baron slow?
oh wow, I didn't know that Douglas Murray went to Cornell
I'd say no thanks.

Ooops - good catch - I corrected it... strange how the Canucks have so many right shooting D.Strangelove wrote:Should be:

As for adding a veteran with a mean streak, I would add decent skater to that characteristic list... maybe Pedan will surprise and make the big club next season.

"Bulldog" Biega looked pretty good on his 7 games.. Other than the gamewinner against Minnesota he was hitting everybody that came near him .. 9 hits against the Isles.. Not a big guy but "Assholes" come in all sizes ? Maybe a 7 or 8 dman? 26 is about the right age for a dman to hit his top potential..'m hoping they can convince Biega he's a career AHLer and to sign a one-way contract with your rich Canucks

I would prefer they keep him over Weber.

Me too. I would rather have a giant Toblerone bar than our Swiss D... it has a higher IQ than the two of them combined.Hockey Widow wrote:

I hope our latest acquisition, Sven, is just lazy and not stupid like his countrymen.

I've always liked Murray... I think we've had this conversation before amirite Per?Per wrote:Re: assholishness. BUT... omg he was bad in Montreal last season.
Yeah, he's always been slow, but that was ridiculous .
I can't remember was it injuries?
