Leaves trying to move out Zaitsev (5 x $4.5m left on deal.)
Elliotte:
After a difficult season, TOR and Nikita Zaitsev are working together to find him a fresh start.
He is available and we will see where it goes.
Really doubt they'd get much. Be a step backwards for us. He might be the sort that just decides to back to Russia
and get all the ice-time he wants. Money would be close to as good.

Zaitsev is a cap dump at this point, overpaid by at least $2M for 5 more years.
Leaves would have to add a massive sweetener to unload dat dere.

Are you kidding me?
He makes four times as much with this contract as he would in the KHL.
I'll bet he wants out of Pigtown because he is being shat upon by the fans big time.

Ya, I know. Just trying to belittle the jerk. He's getting 2 mil. too much now., at least.
So funny, the leaves are losing three of their top-4d, two as UFA and one will cost an asset to get rid of, when their D was their weak point, and will have no money to upgrade or even replace....
So really,
“The 27-year-old blueliner informed leaves management that he is requesting a trade for personal reasons after three seasons with Toronto and GM Kyle Dubas indicated that he met with Zaitsev’s agent Daniel Milstein at the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo on Thursday and that he will endeavor to facilitate a trade. “
He’s asked to be moved. Any trade value he had just went down.
I've done the math, Canucks can sign Marner to a 12 mil offersheet and if the leaves don't match, they can sign Karlsson for 10 mil, Boeser for 7 and keep Eriksson, Rousell and Beagle and still have about 5 mil in cap space left over.
Signing Karlsson probably entices Edler to just take 5 mil for 2 years to play with his fellow country man in the city he loves.
There will be enough contracts coming off the books by the time Pettersson and Hughes are up for their new deals (not to mention at least 5 mil more in cap space with increases), and it gives JB two years to find a new home for Loui
Marner is worth 4 first round picks - that lineup is a playoff lineup for the foreseeable further, no doubt in my mind. 4 picks in the 20s who will probably take a few years to pay dividends for a 21 year old (22?) who will be a stud for the next 7 years is worth it.
That's my opinion. The team is in a spot now where they can afford it - they still have the 10th this year, which will hopefully be their last pick not in the 20s for a while.

....and they think their window isn't closed!
Reilly and Muzzin are their top two. The rest of the blue line is garbage. Gardener is ok but I think Dermott could replace him or Hainsey or Zaitsev. They are banking on kids like Sandin or Liljegren to make the jump. It’s a thin group for sure. They need to move a forward or three. Too too heavy.

Hainsey, Gardiner, and Zaitsev were #2-4 in average ice-time for the Leaves, though I didn't compare it for after the Muzzin trade.
And certainly they're garbage, but they played big minutes = that's three 20+ minute defencemen that are just walking out the door for nothing. Lets say Dermott comes back and can play in top-4 role - they still need two of Sandin, Llijegren and Rosen to turn into 20+ minute defencemen.
