Marner's ask just went up to $13M.
On an 8 year contract?
Remember, he'll prolly sign a 5 year contract so Leaves can keep the AAV down (like Matthews and Nylander).
I'd say on any contract. But in Marner's case yes, 8 years. Remember, he's a hometown kid who wants to be there long term if he can.
That's not how it works these days on contracts for young stars.
If they'll sign for $10M-per on a 5 year deal, they want $11M-per on a 6 year, $12M+ on a 7 year, $13M+ on an 8 year.
Roughly speaking.
He'd probably rather play for his hometown team, but he won't take less money.
His agent has made that clear and that his camp wants to recoup for not getting max bonuses on his ELC.
Didn't I say $13M for 8 years?
Which in this cap is actually realistic. It would be almost $2M more than Matthews. Obviously his agent is going to tell Dubas that if they are buying UFA years, and getting him for this long when the cap is going to continue to climb, then the Leaves are going to have to accommodate that.
I just looked.....the cap has gone up by almost $20M since 2011. Based on that if they want 8 years from Marner the opening ask from his agent will probably be $15M.
Question for ya Doc (if you know).....
Chara's last contract saw his cap hit drop in the last season of the contract because the Bruins took higher cap hits on him in the first years of his deal. So his actual salary became his cap in each year. Is that still possible for a team to do? Like sign a guy for 8 years and increase his AAV by $X every season?

Best city in the world.
Now your pushing it.
When it was just about sports, things were fun, sort of.
But saying ^ that, well, you just lost all credibility.
Have you ever visited anywhere else?
Born in Montreal. People tell me that's a great city. LOL. Hellhole. Visited Sydney, Paris, London,.
I’ll take Riga over Toront-hole any day. Safer, cleaner, and friendlier. Transit system is better. Food is better and cheaper and the beer beats anything your hipster bullshit craft breweries can manage. Toronto is not even in the same league as Paris and London. Those are imperial-class capitals rich with history and culture. Toronto has a tower...
big... fucking... whoop...
Your city is a shithole that only pretends to compare to other elite cities.

Do you know how safe Toronto is? It's numbers are the best you'l find Anywhere. Much safer than Vancouver

I didn’t give a fuck about the Grizzlies. Few people did when they were here and even fewer do now
So you;d rather not have an NBA team and have a parade. Gotcha.
I don’t like the NBA. I find basketball boring. I’d like an MLB team here but we don’t have a stadium and there’s way too many recent immigrants here that it wouldn’t get supported anyways. I’d like to see the NFL here but they aren’t coming to Canada.

I dunno Blobcat. I think it would do well, there would be an instant rivalry with the Mariners for starters. And baseball is pretty big in Japan, and as far as the Indian folks go, just tell them it's North American cricket and they'll come out 40 strong per household.
Personally it's like watching paint dry. But people would come out.
