Then he'll Leave for the desert for his 8 year contract.
LOL at your chart showing $9M x 8 Skinner right up there with $11.634M x 5 Matthews.

That's not how it works these days on contracts for young stars.Mëds wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 8:58 pmI'd say on any contract. But in Marner's case yes, 8 years. Remember, he's a hometown kid who wants to be there long term if he can.Strangelove wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 8:07 pmOn an 8 year contract?
Remember, he'll prolly sign a 5 year contract so Leaves can keep the AAV down (like Matthews and Nylander).
If they'll sign for $10M-per on a 5 year deal, they want $11M-per on a 6 year, $12M+ on a 7 year, $13M+ on an 8 year.
Roughly speaking.
He'd probably rather play for his hometown team, but he won't take less money.
His agent has made that clear and that his camp wants to recoup for not getting max bonuses on his ELC.

Who cares? Pay your stars. Don't give a Jeff Skinner after his peak years 8 million at 9 per.Strangelove wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 9:36 pmThat's not how it works these days on contracts for young stars.Mëds wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 8:58 pmI'd say on any contract. It's exactly the same situation you'll be looking at for Matthews/Marner/Nylander in 5 years.
(except by then it's be waaaaaaay more of course)

What happens if they offer him the biggest contract in history a year before he's UFA?Strangelove wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 9:29 pmYup, when he refuses to re-sign, Leaves will trade his rights for a 3rd round pick in June 2024.Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 8:52 pmHe can’t get 8 years unless leaves trade him I guess. 7 year max as a FAStrangelove wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 8:35 pm Matthews has missed 34 games to injury in the last 2 seasons

What's interesting is you think Arizona will sign him. Did you read the news? They could not afford to take on Phil Kessel's salary. So what changes financially for them in 5 years? They are so broke.
They can't afford a player making 6.8 million, but will give 18+ million per in 5 years?

Re: The Official CC "All Thing Leaves" thread
As long as they sign him by July 1st they can give him 8 years. His contract isn't up until June 30th of any given year so if they trade him at the draft his final year and Arizona gets a deal done before his contract expires then ya, they can give him 8 years so stick with your original opinion.....Strangelove wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 9:39 pmI edited it as you were typing...

Matthews is not resigning with Toronto, just accept it. He’s American
