They better start giving up more goals, because they gave up less than Washington and Tampa last season without Tavares.
Weren't they second-worst for goals-against?

Ohhh I see, you were talking about the regular season.

You see Tuna, there's actually a "Second Season", that comes after game 82. I know you're not very familiar with it , but its called "the playoffs".

And believe it or not, there's actually more rounds after the 1st one! Crazy, right?!

Oh, and by the way, the Leaves were the 2nd-worst defensive team in the playoffs.

LOL you mean the "Playoffs" the Leaf have played in the past 2 years and the Canucks have not? I am familiar.
You must be confidant Andersen posts sub .900 every year and Matthews plays that bad.

The discussion was missing Polak and Leo and I assumed it was including regular season. Komorov is garbage. That contract was hilarious Lou gave him.

It keeps Leaves talk away from other threads. You really don't want me to lock it....

Well out west we have had the benefit of watching Andersen’s up and down play in Anaheim for longer than his tenure with the leaves. He had always been hot and then cold. There’s no middle of the road with this guy, and his cold is usually so bad that it drags his hot numbers crashing to earth so rapidly that people tend to forget how good he can be when he’s on.....it doesn’t help that his cold streaks often last for a month at a time, while his hot streaks can be anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months.

Look no further than his playoff stat lines. With the exception of 2015-16 his save percentage in the playoffs has NOT been enough to get it done.

Nobody is questioning the Leaves ability to be a regular season force in the east and make the playoffs with Andersen as the backstop. The question is are they strong enough defensively to get beyond the first round.

Andersen has gone beyond 7 starts before, but behind a couple of behemoth Anaheim teams that gave no quarter and were led by stars who snarled as much as they scored. Tarrana’s star players don’t snarl, they pout.

This era’s Maple leaves = WCE-era Canucks, with a much lesser blueline. Enjoy the regular season entertainment; the blueline and goal-line will only bring you post-season tears - especially when they have to face the likes of Tampa and Boston on the regular. It’s like Lucy with a football and Charlie Brown’s winding up for the kickoff.

What's going to happen when Boston has to match-up with Tavres/Matthews/Kadri every second in a playoff series?

Strangelove wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 11:41 am That's because Andersen performs well in the regular season (sucks in the post season).

Holtby is the opposite.

And don't forget their 2 best penalty-killing dmen were Polak and Hainsey.

Polak is gonzo with no replacement, and Hainsey succumbed to old age as the season wore on.

Also gone is their best penalty-killing forward Komarov (played centre on their #1 PK unit).

Meanwhile Tampa should be better defensively with a full year of McDonagh

... and Hedman having come into his own defensively down the stretch.

(most folks also expect young Vasilevskiy to continue improving)

Leaves neglecting the defensive side of the game will continue to be their downfall.

Did they learn nothing the last two playoffs? :eh:
LOL at trying to say the leaves are going to miss plugs Komorov and Polak.
We were talking about the Leaves defensive issues, the fact is those 2 were their best PK guys and: Gone.

(Hainsey was also a great PKer for them last year but he died of old age towards the end of the season)

BigTuna wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 5:20 pm Komorov was actually terrible last year and was not good defensively.
Nope, Komarov had a tough year offensively but was his usual stellar self defensively.

He, Polak, the recently deceased Hainsey, and the only-good-in-the-regular-season Andersen

... were the reasons for Leaves having one of the best regular season PKs in the league.

Of course their PK was the worst in the league post-season cuz Komarov was injured, Hainsey died, and Andy was Andy.

BigTuna wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 5:20 pm The leaves did not give up a lot of goals last season. 3rd lowest in the EAst.
Leaves were 11th out of the 16 playoff teams in that category… in the regular season

… and 15th out of those same 16 teams in the playoffs.

Washington was 4th, Tampa 6th in the playoffs.

(other teams tighten up in the playoffs, Leaves are incapable of that)

Leaves gave up more shots than any of the other 16 teams that qualified for the playoffs

… and that trend cost them in the playoffs.

BigTuna wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 4:20 pm Only the leaves could sign the biggest UFA in the entire NHL in at leat a dozen years and a 4th line plug who got 19 points is who they will really miss.
4th line plug?? Actually Komarov has been playing top-6 minutes for the past few seasons.

Leaves brought in top line guy Tavares yes, but they also lost 3 of their top 9 forwards by icetime.

One of those 3 scored 36 goals, one was their best faceoff guy, and the other was by far their best defensive forward.

BigTuna wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 4:20 pm Johnsson is better overall esaily than Komorov.
So Johnsson with his 9 NHL games at 11:42 is going to magically replace one of the best defensive forwards in the league??

Seriously, who replaces Komarov as the centre on the #1 PK unit?

BigTuna wrote: Sun Sep 16, 2018 4:20 pm Leo was a healthy scratch.
That's not true, Komarov missed 5.5 of the Leaves 7 playoff games with an ankle injury.

He declared himself fit for Game 7 but he was overruled by the team doctors/Babcock.

(hence your confusion)

Komarov has never been a healthy scratch in the NHL...

No one is questioning if Laughs will be good, they will be.

No one is questioning if they will make the playoffs, they will.

BUT - the team with the same D and the same goaltending is expecting a different result comes the playoffs. IMO every SC champion had a goalie that won some unwinable games, the question is if Anderson and the D up for the challange? History has proven that the probability is low.

So now it will be interesting to see how the team plays this year and if they play a 200' game or will it be guns a blazing and hope they out score all the defensive issues. I will donate $100 to this site if the Laughs do not make the playoffs - safe bet I know but that would be the best $100 I have ever spent.
