Not only did it massively damage Sittler, but also Leaves nation as a hole and they feel that pain to this very day.
Freudian?
I've read and heard a lot about Bobby Clarke of late for various reasons.
I can tell you this about that.
98% of the people who associated with him in one way, shape or form have nothing but good things to say about the guy.
leaves fans are sensitive souls. When I first started my tour of duty out that way, moved there the third week of January of '90, they made the playoffs that year, the only time while I was there as I moved back in early '93. I was living in Mississauga and nearby there was a Don Cherry's Grapevine, so I went in there with a client to watch Game 3 vs the Blues, a home game, and it goes into overtime before Momesso ices the game making it a 3-0 series. Sure enough, when he scores you here quiet groans but generally silence, except for one extremely loud "YES! HAHAHA!" everybody in the place just turned their heads at me in unison, like right out of a movie, and I seriously almost needed a police escort out of the place. Good times.
I was so happy when they hired Tom Watt early the following season, I knew he'd drive the team into the ditch.
Doc, I have that book. What made it worse was, they were even going to announce his captaincy at a luncheon, the media is alerted, so he's doing all these interviews on what it means to be a captain and whatnot at the practice facility before they head out for the luncheon, but it's not announced at the luncheon. Odd. So from the luncheon they team bus it back to their practice facility and when he gets off the bus, Keenan pulls him aside to tell him he needs to meet Sittler in his office. Clarke's already in the office when they arrive and tells Sittler they just traded him to Detroit.
So in the morning he's doing all these media interviews at the practice facility and just hours later when they return, he's traded. Holy smokes.
Just to add, at the place I retired from, my counterpart in Central Canada was a leaves alumni, he got into a couple of games with them and actually played with Boudreau some in St. Catharines, and he figured it was even worse than that but Sittler may have sanitized it in the book to save face somehow.
Hey I went to high school with Jim Rutherford. He was our star goalie for Banting Memorial High School in Alliston Ontario. I remember going to games all over. The guy was a stud and a local hero. I do say he probably got more action that the high school quarterback!!

Bobby Clarke treated Roger Neilson with the utmost class and respect.
...you're referring to this one can safely presume?
"The Neilson situation - Roger got cancer - that wasn't out fault," Clarke said. "We didn't tell him to go get cancer. It's too bad that he did. We feel sorry for him, but then he went goofy on us."
