He did try to trade down. But no takers. Once our pick came up he selected. Almost had Vegas bite on a swap of picks but McPhee called his bluff that Glass would still be there.

And Benning got criticized for telegraphing his pick.

My point was that he might had had more takers to trade down if had started with a higher pick.

Telegraphing his pick may have hindered his trade down gambit, and so count against the genius argument, but as I said above, maybe genius drafting (If that's what the Canucks have had from Benning) trumps other management functions.

I'll try to be back when the "Benning is a hockey management genius" thesis is proven, or refuted. (It's only fair to the True Believers that i should show up to eat a big helping of crow pie after the Canucks' 2nd back-to-back Stanley Cup win in 2020.)
