If Cassels can translate into someone close to the caliber of player Peca was, it could make the 2013 draft one of the most critical for the team in years regardless of what happens to Shinkaruk or Subban.Todd Bersnoozi wrote:Cassels thrives on playing a physical game that allows him to be one of the more feared players on the ice when he is out there. Hopefully he'll become a Mike Peca type player.SKYO wrote: Cassels finishes with 10G, 21A in 21 playoff games.

Yeah Cassels is defintetly a Peca type but a bit bigger at 6'-1" 190. Has that same warrior game and lethal hitting. You can't have enough of that in the line-up. If Richie Rich doesn't re-sign with us, it'll open up a spot at centre ice. I think Cassels might have a good chance to make the big club next season. NHL coaches generally hesitate to play guys who are a liabilty defensively; if Cassels can shut down McJesus, u know the kid can check. Just work him in like we did with BoHo. Put him on the 4th line and tell him not to worry about scoring, just play smart defensively and a solid 2-way game. Depending how he adjusts, he might be potential guy to play some PK. He seems to play with an edge, so he can be a gritty/energy player for us as well. We could also really use a right shot centreman who can win some draws, if he can do that, it'll be a really bonus. He really brings a lot to the table and has some elements that we really need. Linden Vey is like the opposite and doesn't really provide us with any needs on our roster.RoyalDude wrote: Yeah Cassels is defintetly a Peca type but a bit bigger at 6'-1" 190. There's some definite promise coming up the ranks...especially down the middle.
We desperately need something on D though. Its going to become a massive issue in the not too distant future me thinks.

Re: Prospects Thread 2014-15
People use all sorts of criteria to "rate" Vancouver's prospects. I thought I would try a different one - how many games will they play in their NHL career. Many players who are not top prospects end up putting in far more years than the top guns. As such, can be considered to be valuable assets. Of course, they might get those games playing with another team
My list includes all players born in the 90's. (Plus Conacher cause he missed the 90's by only 2 weeks)
I know that some of these may sound crazy but here we go:
750 game list
Horvat
Virtanen
Cassels
500 game list
Baertchi
Demko
McCann
Shinkaruk
Kenins
Gaunce
Pedan
Subban
Clendenning
Tryamkin
Kassian
McMillian
Sbisa
Vey
Cederholm
200 game list
Corrado
Hutton
Pettit
Stewart
Eriksson
Markstrom
Call up <200 games
Jensen
Friesen
McNally
Grenier
Cannata
LaBate
Sautner
Archibald
Conacher (Dec 89 birth)
Zalewski
Never
McEneny
Fox
Bloomstrand
Blain

Re: Prospects Thread 2014-15
If anything, some of these are seriously lowballing. Cassels playing 750 game would be great as he wasnt a high pick or projected to be a big scorer.lostinarink wrote: My list includes all players born in the 90's. (Plus Conacher cause he missed the 90's by only 2 weeks)

Etc...
Horvat and Virtanen only playing 750 games would be a disappointment, as would Kassian at 500 (he alreaedy has 198). Even underachieving high draft picks will hit that range. Compare these 1st round big forwards from the 90s. (also remember that they lost a full season in their prime years).
1993
#3 Chris Gratton 1092 games
#6 Rob Neidermeyer 1153 games
1994
3rd Radek Bonk 969 game
14th Ethan moreau 928 games
17th Wayne Primeau 774 games
1995
4th Chad Kilger 714 games
1996
6th Boyd Devereaux 627 games
None of these guys were superstars, but even a journeyman can get 700 games.
To think that our best forward prospects will fall short of being the next Taylor Pyatt (8th, 1999, 859 games) does not inspire confidence.
