For another, that whole commonplace pose we see all the time now that says "anyone who adopts a favourable stance towards the New NHL doesn't know anything about hockey" is both arrogant and weak. Arrogance? All the time. Weak posing? Never happened. By that I meant that it's a weak method of argui...

I won't comment on what that statement says about your knowledge of the game, but at least you're happy. Y'know, that's kind of unfair (mean, too). For one thing, there are plenty of different kinds of "knowledge of the game" (some people know stats, others have practical experience, some follow th...

Yeah, the NHL in Halifax will not happen :P One thing that Bettman finally admitted, that I've been thinking for a while, is that one of the reasons the eastern teams don't want to play in the west is because of TV and time zones: a game at 10:00 p.m. if Toronto's playing in Vancouver is a bunch of ...

Re: Report out of Toronto

Yeah, in terms of culture, Toronto doesn't match up to Paris or London; but it's more diverse than either (I value that), and cultural-event-wise it beats the hell out of Vancouver. Forgot to mention! Was just talking to a friend, and we agreed that Vancouver has something else that Toronto doesn't...

Re: Report out of Toronto

The thing is though, Vancouver is a much prettier city. There are obviously advantages to both (Toronto = big city, more stuff to do) but I suppose I was underwhelmed because I was just coming from Paris and London. In terms of big cities, there's nothing really special about this place. Just out o...

Re: Report out of Toronto

8. Walking around this city the last few days, I'm overwhelmed by its mediocrity! This in spite of the fact that it has significant nostalgic value to me. Seriously I'm constantly asking myself why it took my parents so long to decide to move to Vancouver. We really are spoiled here. Every Canadian...

Jim Hughson

All that talk of the foibles of Cole and Neale reminds me that I've meant to post for a while about what a good commentator Jim Hughson is. He's always on top of things (and conscientious about figuring out the names of new players -- which can't be easy to keep up with), appears unbiased and intere...

Re: Will the CBC please put Cole and Neil out to pasture?

Mats Naslund played for the Canadiens when both Neale and Bob Cole didn't have Alzheimer's. On the other hand, after having read your various posts for a while now, I've decided I'd rather listen to a couple of harmless has-been media personalities than a never-was whose sole tone is one of sneerin...

Also Henrik Gradin seemed to be on the ice at one point; and Bieksa has some alter egos named "Bieska" and "Biekska". I could almost hear them practicing his name during the intermissions.

But the Mats Naslund one was classic :)

What surprised me was how low the numbers are for the AHL. Depends. What sort of capacity do their arenas have? Dunno, but the Phantoms play in the Spectrum don't they? And the new Winnipeg arena has to seat 15,500+ That's pretty big! But the lesser cities must have smallish arenas, I'm guessing. I...

When I was in sixth or seventh grade (1984 I guess?), I had no hockey cards. I never bought any. A friend of mine generously gave me a "brownback" of Tony Esposito (goalie cards for some reason being worth more in those days). No idea what date that meant. The serious card collector of my school gav...

Much the same happened with Ottawa. Their skilled guys used to always get bullied by Toronto; but the addition of people like Chris Neil put an end to that. Neil really added a lot to that team.
