I think Fred's objection here, is that GMMG's options are no different than Nonis', he's doing exactly what Nonis would, but he slammed Nonis and has a palpable downside re: prior relationships with other GMs AND lack of experience (as Nonis had). Either way GMMG is here to stay for a while, so I ho...

On reflection, I'm okay with Gillis not making any trades so far (even though I'm not a Gillis fan). If I were Gillis (or any virgin GM) I'd be hyper-sensitive about my first trades, and very conscious I didn't get ripped off. I might even talk to a few people without the intention of making a deal,...

I suspect part of the problem is owing to pre-existing problems. The canucks weaknesses are well known, and so the relative value of a player might well go up (i.e. we need the trade more than the counterparty). Plus, our prospect cupboard is bare. If it were me, I'd go after UFAs to fill most of my...

For the record, I'm pretty pleased with what we got in the early rounds. Initially wanted Beach but Cody seems lower risk, plus a decent defender as well. Later rounds? Not so much... we picked the coach's son after all. I seriously doubt he's going to make waves anywhere. Almost a wasted pick in my...

Happy with the draft?
Five more horses in the prospect stable, and no trades to speak of. Are you happy with our draft, or are you going to be saying "told you so" in a few years time?

Perfect sense? Not sure I agree. Semi-random decisions as a reaction to poor prior performance isn't perfect sense. It's just "doing something". At this stage Gillis has GM experience. Maybe he can point to a stable of players he picked successfully (how many did he represent that went nowhere?), bu...

Some other quotes from the article which seem a bit odd:
"Though Walter has no coaching experience in professional hockey, the 50-year-old father of five has spent a lifetime immersed in the game - experience Gillis feels is invaluable."
AND
“I wanted to understand where [Walter] wanted to be in five or ten years, and [ensure] that we were going to be in a position to accommodate those needs,†said Gillis. “I also wanted to be sure that we were hiring the best possible assistant coach we could find, and I think that’s the case.â€
Hrm. The best possible assistant coach has no coaching experience . Kinda like our GM.
Do the best people really have no experience? MY experience tells me that prior experience is important.

I think the key here is a team's strike rate in the first round against teams with similar picks. A tricky stat to capture, but something along the lines of: how many canuck first rounders became quality pros versus the teams which drafted +/- 4 positions over the past 5 - 10 years? I think in the f...
