Open Letter to Puck Daddy: Greg Wyshynski

Dear Greg:

My name is Justine Galo, also known as “The Broad” from A View From a Broad and on occasion I ‘Muse’ from CanucksCorner.com. I follow you on twitter and you and I are Facebook friends. We also once had a discussion about Cuban and Honduran cigars on your profile picture. Do I sound like a creeper yet? Relax, I’m not. I have no desire to bring myself down to New Jersey and follow your every move. I just need to unload this uneasy feeling in my chest.

I recently read your blog, Puck Daddy’s 2009-10 Stanley Cup staff prognostications and I want to ask you to please not tease my heart too much. Please don’t say the Vancouver Canucks are going to win the Stanley Cup over the Philadelphia Flyers while Roberto Luongo will hoist Conn Smyth.

You see, the Canucks are to me, that boyfriend that keeps you going back regardless of how many times he disappoints you. It’s a cycle I find myself repeating many times over. I am still a Canucks fan despite all the disappointments over the years. They own my heart.

This has been going on the last 28 years of my life. I can only take so many first round exits, missed playoffs, goalie-career deaths, changes of uniforms, and great teams on paper that cannot win big when it counts. I need to see a light at the end of this tunnel. I love them but I also keep a ‘realistic’ sense of just how good the Canucks really are. I’ve come to looking at them as a team I would rather have “under promise and over deliver”. You listing them as your favourite changes my cynicism towards my beloved team. I am now, at conflict with myself.

Sure Mike Gillis is making all the right moves as you and many other experts are saying. Sure Luongo is an elite goaltender, something the Canucks lacked in previous renditions as a team. I know we have some pretty good depth on the farm but it’s almost like you’re cursing them, just to me, by saying out right, “Please don’t jinx us Canucks fans! “We’ve been pining for our team to finally sip some bubbly from Lord Stanley’s challis. It’s almost like if we say it, it will never come true.

Could you possibly redo that article and say someone else will win the cup so can go back to being a fan that has high hopes but doesn’t set high expectations? It would put my mind at ease a lot.
