Let the games begin. After sitting out the playoffs last season, Canucks fans are foaming at the mouth for a little post season hockey, and it starts this week. The Vancouver Canucks ended the 2008/09 regular season with a 1-0 overtime victory over the Colorado Avalanche. The win gave the Canucks the Northwest Division title, and ensured they will finish 3rd and have home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs
Roberto Luongo enters the post season on a two game 145 minute and 16 second shutout streak and despite a bout of the flu making the rounds, the Canucks as a team go in healthy and confident.
At the time this was written it was down to Anaheim or Columbus for the Canucks in the first round. Chicago and Calgary will meet, while San Jose will get St. Louis, and Detroit will get who Vancouver does not.
Even with their opponent yet to be determined, you have to like the Canucks chances at home in the first round, as there isn’t a team sitting there they can’t compete with. In fact there probably isn’t even one in the conference the way they have been playing for two months now. And, they have Roberto Luongo.
One would like to think the value of Mats Sundin will be more evident in the playoffs. While his contributions on the ice have been “okay” his real value has been off the ice according to many on the team. Now is his time to shine, and it should mean that teams won’t be able to concentrate on shutting down the twins, giving Vancouver two solid lines in the playoffs for the first time in years. With Luongo on his game, and his penchant for kicking it up a notch in big games, the Canucks are going to be a nasty piece of business for any team they face.
